Nice narrative but the reality is slightly different from my perspective. The Niners held on to Jimmy G for a reason that makes perfect sense. They are going to start a rookie QB with a ton of potential. Learning to read defenses in the NFL is a very steep learning curve for QBs who haven't played as a pocket passer, reading defenses in college.
The Niners want to be competitive this coming season. I think they want insurance Jimmy G provides if Lance struggles badly in camp or during the season. Rather than destroy his confidence they would sit him down and allow him to develop another season. Remember Josh Allen took a couple of years to blossom.
The other factor complicating Jimmy G's trade is his health issue. Teams were wary about Jimmy's injuries to his thumb and throwing shoulder. He had surgery on both and they were successful. The problem is he won't be able to throw for 4 months, i.e. until after TCs start. So once he proves he's fine in TC his market will be much greater. It also provides them time to continue to evaluate Lance's progress. I for one am not sleeping on Lance. He doesn't look like a bust to me, rather if the Niners don't rush him, he can be a franchise-level player for them. He had a high ceiling in the draft but also the caveat that he was raw and needed time to develop. This is exactly the same type of evaluation Josh Allen had and now he's looking like he will be an elite QB.
If Lance validates the Niner's confidence in him during TC then the team will have a market for a healthy Jimmy G either leading up to the draft or during it for teams who miss out on their targeted prospect. In other words the Jimmy G story isn't finished and neither is Trey Lance's and the Niners were right in not pressing the issue on either.
