In 16 Week One preseason games, there were 16 pass interference replay reviews

The first full week of 2019 preseason games have been played, and the 16 Week One contests included 16 replay reviews of calls and non-calls of offensive and defensive pass interference.

Based on a review of the official NFL game books for the games played on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, 14 replay reviews happened via coach’s challenge and two were initiated by the replay official. Of the 14 challenges, only one was overturned; in the Jets-Giants game, a 33-yard penalty was imposed on the Giants after Jets coach Adam Gase challenged a non-call of defensive pass interference.

The two challeneges initiated by the replay official happened in the same quarter of the same game (Bengals-Chiefs), when replay official Darryl Lewis called for a review of potential defensive pass interference right after the two-minute warning (the non-call was correctly overturned) and potential offensive pass interference roughly a minute later (the non-call was upheld, even though it shouldn’t have been).

Two of the challenges related to offensive pass interference, and 12 involved defensive pass interference.

With 48 preseason games still to be played, more challenges will be needed in order to help the league office better understand the nuances, realities, and potential unintended consequences of the new replay procedure before commencing the games that count. The league should ask coaches to throw flags more often over the next three weeks.

It already should be clear that the availability of replay review will have a significant potential impact on the game, with senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron having the power to impose massive changes in field position.

It said (during the game) it has to clearly show the defender prevented the receiver from catching the ball.....or something like that. The raider defender had a fist full of jersey. The wr got a hand or two on the ball.

They will get an offensive PI every time Mike Thomas catches a pass. He is always pushing or pulling just before the pass arrives.

DeAndre Hopkins as well. The interesting thing with these guys is that it almost always turns into a two-way shoving match. I hope the reviews end up flagging both guys. Critical play, end of the game, crowd roaring that Michael Thomas got interfered with on a 30 yard throw... "After further review, both players committed pass interference... replay 2nd down!"

That's something that's still great about college and even high school football, contact down the field isn't penalized unless it's actually pass interference.

That non call could have been just as much as a game changer as the other non call. Even Aikman says it should have been a facemask penalty the replay .Saints up 20-17 at the time. With 6:43 left Goff runs in down to the 4 yard line. Now it should have had a 1st and goal not a 3rd down. At worse the rams would have run off a lot more time. So if Sean wants to be fair in his argument. Sean needs to bring up that missed call also. Would love to hear him respond to that question.

I was very glad that Andrew Siciliano bring up the Goff helmet exorcist moment during the broadcast.

Here's my take on the rule. If they want to challenge it, then the whole play should be questioned. Any penalties that are found need to be called on the play. Offside, holding by either team, you name it. They should watch the play from the beginning to the end and call everything.

Eventually we're going to have an NFL product where after each play there's a 2 minute pause as they nuke every player and what they did wrong. To ensure that fans don't suffer the horror of a missed call. God forbid.

At some point I would hope all that will swing the other way, but I am not confident.

And it was my concern from the get-go. It'll be even worse when they call DPI on a review when the WR was shoving as well.

If they wanted to limit the impact of PI, change it to a 15 yard penalty and don't call it as often. Which ironically would have put the Saints in the same situation. It was a bad missed call but that fan base acting like it's the end of the world is laughable - when the Vikings got screwed in favor of the Saints in 2009 none of them were crying.

TONY DUNGY URGES NFL TO GET RID OF PASS INTERFERENCE CHALLENGES (TWEET)

Back in March, the NFL made a huge decision when they approved a new rule proposal that allows for offensive and defensive pass interference calls and non-calls to be subject to review, with coaches being able to challenge the penalties in the first 28 minutes of each half.

It has been a complete and utter failure.

Because of that, Tony Dungy and many others like him believe the league is just wasting everyone’s time. New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur challenged a pass interference non-call on MNF against the Dallas Cowboys, and it was clear and evident that a penalty should’ve been thrown.

The officials still decided not to drop a flag upon reviewing the play.

The success rate of coaches challenging pass interference calls and non-calls this season dropped to less than 10 percent.

At this point it seems apparent that this was just the NFL trying to appease the Saints fans and any other fans up in arms over the playoff non call. They had no real intention of making this work, and they just want it to go away.

Hard to argue with that assessment, it appears that the rule makers were not trying to prevent something similar to the Robey-Coleman play, they were trying to prevent that exact play from happening again, and anything else won’t be overturned.
