2023 is looking more and more like a season where they are setting themselves up for next season. A throwaway season. See how many rookies get playing time and valuable experience for next year.

Then look at free agents. Will Houston let Laremy Tunsil walk? He'll be a free agent after this season. He played every snap last year and gave up one sack. PFF gave him a 91.7 pass block rating. Best among all offensive tackles. He's 28 years old.

I say the Rams have to do whatever they can to land this guy and make him their cornerstone left tackle for the next 5 to 7 years. Maybe even longer. Heck, if the Texans are not competing they may want to move him before the deadline. Rams have draft assets. He could be our next Andrew Whitworth.

It'll probably cost quite a bit to acquire him. But I think it would be worth it.

2023 should reflect BPA as much as possible in the draft, although that still may require us to make venturesome moves at QB & K.

2024 will likely be more about filling holes than 2023, and that includes both free agency and the draft. jmo.

What is “BPA” and how do you tell who that is before they have played a down in the league?

Stick to your draft board. Basically. You can stack that shit perfect and still end up with a favorite that you want to take and then bend everything to take him. Be disciplined and use that board.

For me, BPA is just as it sounds. Our entire contingent of scouts along with analyst Nicole Blake, and of course Les Snead, Sean McVay, our O & D coordinators and many of their most trusted assistants will come together to reach a consensus of who is best at every position within their purview. There will be 100's of hours dedicated to watching film.
Later, when it's determined that some of these players scores are fairly close, then look for need positions to move to the top of the board as the draft progresses.

So many times I see the talking heads list of BPA and the teams go completely different direction.

I don’t see how need can be overlooked. Taking a QB or WR with #36 this year would make me lose some of the confidence I have in the FO team.

I can’t imagine it not being C or Edge maybe CB at that pick. I know they put a ton into analytics and think a little too highly of freakish athletes vs football players. That’s all good for rounds 5-7 but there are so many freaking holes right now they just cannot miss with those first few picks.

Yeah, I understand, but I think you are still trying more to get competitive for 2023 than building for the future and 2024.
I agree that I'd be equally disappointed drafting that high at WR, although a 3'rd round QB seems quite possible if the Rams have any concern for Stafford's health & longevity. A Center going high for us now after the Rams re-signed Shelton doesn't seem likely unless he plays or competes for LG this year also. An Edge DL may be a superior player to an Edge OLB, depending on who remains available, and it's starting to look like we'll be losing 3 defensive linemen. jmo.

I guess it’s possible to get a band aid QB in the third but I just don’t see that being the way the Rams handle that position. If they aren’t getting a bonafide stud for the future they’ll be looking to lure someone with the new standard for mega-contracts or loading up 5 years’ worth of 1st round picks to trade for one.

Since the buzz has been about loading up on offense and McVay has been saying he’s going to fix the run game, I could see a top RB in round 2 or 3. Oline even though they haven’t shown they will spend draft capital there would be my preferred way of “fixing the offense.”

I don't see a highly drafted QB as a band aid, although he'd be current insurance, and with our rather poor 2023 roster, he's likely given time to develop. On the other hand, drafting a top RB now will confuse the RB room again as Akers enters his contract year, and it's probably his last year here anyway as he'll be entering free agency in 2024. Why waste a top RB on an awful offense this year when their careers are relatively short ? Draft a big later round RB this season to replace Malcolm Brown, then go high in 2024 to replace Akers. jmo.

Yeah if it's something crazy like WR he'd better be a stud. Or else.

Maybe. If someone like Tennessee's Jalin Hyatt fell out of the 1'st, yeah, ... I could then see McVay losing his shit.

Suppose it could happen if teams get crazy about TEs and start snapping them up. There's quite a few teams may like more than they realize. The ones who are a threat underneath in the pattern for example, like LaPorta.

Good idea even if Tunsil is now off the table.

They need an anchor or two on the offensive line. Draft, trade, or FA whatever it takes.
