I’d prefer Robbie Gould if he came cheap enough. Both teams moved on from Mayer and York because they were not good enough.
Yeah, I would love that, but I have a feeling that Gould will be too expensive and I expect the 49ers to sign Gould, cut Gonzalez and put Moody on IR.

I should preface this post with the admission that I am the Sargent Schultz of Place Kickers … ‘I know nothing!’

I’m wondering about Cade York.

Understand that Cleveland moved-on one year after making him a fourth round pick. However, there are some similarities to Matt Gay’s early career.

Gay was a fifth rounder who also struggled in his rookie season, only for the Bucs to move on before his second year.

York and Gay had similar rookie stats in a full season. Not just percentage wise but with accuracy from comparable distances.

I think any PK will be a gamble. Would not mind a young guy with a big leg.

I'd roll the dice with York. Has a leg but has consistency issues. Hate to break it to people but any kicker we get now will have flaws. There aren't many good ones in the league to begin with.

Are you suggesting the Rams should sign Allen Iverson to kick field goals!?!

That’s some REALLY out-of-the-box thinking!

I would like Cade York too, he's young and has the most upside. That being posted, it will probably be Brent Maher.

I wouldn't be shocked if Tanner ends up on practice squad to give him time to work on his craft. Call it a 10% chance in the next 3 weeks.

Maher had a great regular season last year 29/32 FGs, 50/53 XPs, before his infamous playoff meltdown.

I don't think he will have to worry about that pressure this year.

I'm as optimistic as the next guy, and I think we are better than a lot of people are predicting, but I still don't see us getting to the playoffs. Really hope I'm wrong, but just don't see much of a chance for Maher to stress about January field goals or extra points.

I actually concur with that assessment. We will take it, one game at a time.

Maher went 29-for-32 on field goal attempts last year, including 9-for-11 from 50-plus yards. It makes you wonder why he’s even available, but it’s partly because he went 1-for-6 on his extra point attempts with the Cowboys last postseason and he obviously wasn’t good enough for the Broncos this year, seeing as Denver traded for Will Lutz on Tuesday. Maher is probably the Rams’ best available option; he has a big leg and was mostly accurate last year.

The funny part about this kicker situation is this board constantly lamenting we didn't resign Matt Gay. The same board that if he was a rookie for the Rams would have given up on him as a failed rookie.
The only rookie we have given up on in recent memory is one who clearly did not have the talent to do the job. And the board was correct about him.

The board also seems to have been correct on Gay too... Clearly we're gonna feel his departure. As I mentioned before I think McVay got lucky last time with Gay and doesn't have a proper appreciation for kicker hell but the football Gods are going to demand blood this time around.

But maybe he weedles his way out of this situation too. We'll see.
