I think if not resigning Gay to huge contract is one of the worst mistakes Snead ever made is debatable. There are plenty of good kickers that will be available for a lot less money, the Rams just need an upgrade over Brown.
I’m thinking it was a No brainer to let him walk. He got a record contract from Indy to kick for a team that has a raw rookie QB. They won 4 games in 2022. Matt Gay might get them 1 extra win or save 1 loss. Rams are looking at that kind of year. A specialist making that kind of money on a rebuilding team is ridiculous.

Geez dudes he's a rookie. All rookies suffer from inconsistencies. If he simply settles down he will be fine. Younghoe Koo was the worst rookie kicker I've ever seen. Since then for the last 5 years, his success percentage has been in the upper 80s to mid 90s. You guys are so into instant gratification. Yeah, let's forget he was absolute money until these last two misses. So if he's good he learns from it and corrects the mistakes. Better he makes the mistakes now than during the season. Zuerlein missed his share of makeable kicks as well. 2019's missed FG against the Niners stands out as it kept the Rams out of the playoffs. But he was trash too right?

Let's not forget the snapper and holder are rookies as well and his holder has never done it before until this TC.

If Moody gets cut by 9ers, would we consider picking him up instead? Assuming he’s healthy. If we are going with a rookie, I think I’d prefer him over Brown.
He's not healthy and he's been worse than Brown in camp.

Yes, we need to get rid of this bum. He literally only made two kicks, with a long of 39 yards, but also missed a 30 something yarder in the preseason. Not good at all.

Yeah, well I've heard that he's a second cousin to Rob Havenstein, so how about them apples!!!

Having a good kicker could be the difference between picking 1st and picking 3rd.

The Ain'ts Grupe is 5'6"/156 Maybe he'll get cut and we can sign him. He seems to match up with what we were looking for in a kicker.

Matt Gay signed the most expensive deal ever in history for a free agent kicker. An important fact to remember for those who argue it was a "no brainer" to resign-him.

I'm sure the Rams were well aware of how good and how reliable Gay is. This decision was about cap $, pure and simple.

I'm inclined to think Gay is still "worth it", but the bottom line is I'll trust Snead and Pastoors and McVay on the realities of the cap.

Gay is getting 5.6 mill per year on his deal, the Rams just dont have the cap space for that. Would have loved to have had him back but at that number its understandable how they couldnt
I think a kicker of his quality deserves a decent payday. If the Rams don’t have that it is poor planning by the FO.

Some of these constraints with the salary cap and roster size need a big adjustment to allow teams more space to build a better product.

Ain't buyin' it. The Rams could have put the franchise tag on him for 2023 and then negotiated a contract in 2024 when we will have ample cap space.
The franchise tag for a kicker is about half of what he got from Indianapolis. We could have and should have made room for a player like this who is elite at his position.

Matt Gay is still young and in his prime and needed to remain a Ram......

I hear ya, man. If it was my call, I would've figured out a way to keep Gay, because he was as automatic as it gets.

Just saying that when it comes to the cap, I trust McSnead more than I trust myself....

Franchise tag was 5.6 mill, transition tag 4.8. Got 10 mill guaranteed from Indy.

Dicker the kicker looks good. In Snead/McVay I trust. Their hit rate, and the coaching, has been great when it comes to the specialists

I thought @den-the-coach had this kicker shit sorted. WTF.
Yeah, that's on me. Hoping that after the Chargers release Dustin Hopkins, the claim him. There should be some decent kickers available, the Patriots have two kickers, but knowing Belichick, he'll probably keep both.

Theoretically I suppose but he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory this pre-season either.

I saw a thread titled “a whole lotta leg” and thought we signed a new kicker. Then I realized it was on the off topic board.
