I tend to agree with you. He may be a DC only type. Some guys just can’t do both sides of the ball. He has Herbert and I’d bet his focus has really been trying not to waste Herbert. There are a number of great coordinators who weren't good HCs. Staley led us to a #1 defense in 2020 as our DC. His struggles as HC don't speak to his abilities as a DC. Very different jobs.
Brinks truck full of Amazon money, new family he will want to be there for, and he's young enough to jump back in to the NFL and use that as a "reset." It's going to be an alluring combination for him this offseason. He'll probably resist that temptation but I also would not be surprised. We might end up asking who Morris will be hiring as his offensive & defensive coordinators this offseason.
Young man, new baby, disappointing season.
I really won't be surprised if that TV Booth becomes more appealing for McVay if things continue to spiral down.

Loaded with talent on the D unlike the Rams and they're predictable and bland. Really no reason for an offense to fear that D. Also I laughed each time today I've seen Mack in coverage. Giving me flash backs to random ROD gameday threadsWhy would anyone want Staley as a DC at this point? His Chargers units have been mediocre to bad.
Maybe he was ahead of the curve on the new-era of coverages.. and that helped the Rams have an incredible year on D.
But.. man.. his defenses on the Chargers have just NOT been good.
Right?Loaded with talent on the D unlike the Rams and they're predictable and bland. Really no reason for an offense to fear that D. Also I laughed each time today I've seen Mack in coverage. Giving me flash backs to random ROD gameday threads
The funny part is some will say Mack is faster, and game speed he might well be. He certainly has more burst as a pass rusher. But in that over rated thing most people cling to the 40 time? Hoecht was actually faster, his was hand timed.Right?
Dropping OLBs is common stuff.. thing is, you gotta get to the QB!!!! Can’t leave them chasing guys. The funny part is some will say Mack is faster, and game speed he might well be. Mack's a great athlete for his position but yeah he's not running a top 40 time right now. There's guys who can sustain that top 40 but if they bulk up as they go through their late 20s into their early 30s there's gonna be a dip.The funny part is some will say Mack is faster, and game speed he might well be. Good to hear the true facts around here. I honestly don’t want him gone.Raheem is going nowhere. His defense is gonna struggle this year. I doubt anyone will offer him a head coaching gig. He's not leaving. And I wouldn't want him too.
What he did early in the season was impressive. He got them to overachieve the first few games. But the lack of overall talent is finally catching up to them. Raheem is not a magician. Its the old X's and O's vs Jim's and Joe's. And we don't have those Jim's and Joe's.
His college 40 time was a 4.65 and Hoecht was a 4.6. Mack was never a 40 time guy. As for bad design or not all teams do it. Hell DT/NT end up in coverage sometimes it's just one of those things that every DC does occasionally.Mack's a great athlete for his position but yeah he's not running a top 40 time right now. Also any time you see an Edge running with a passing game weapon I think it's simply bad design. It's one thing to drop an Edge into the flat with that area of responsibility (staple of Fangio's scheme for example). But another entirely to have him running man coverage on crossers. It's a bit of a trend in the league for some reason. Probably has to do with personnel grouping and when you get caught in certain looks but I dislike it very much.
It's been around a long time in the form of zone drops. But covering in man on a crosser is a trend that needs to go away. His college 40 time was a 4.65 and Hoecht was a 4.6. Every time I hear these comments on McVay and his impending no-miss media career, I'm reminded how hearing his raspy voice and vague coachspeak in his press conferences is worse to me than fingernails on the chalkboard.Brinks truck full of Amazon money, new family he will want to be there for, and he's young enough to jump back in to the NFL and use that as a "reset."
