Once again the nflpa has screwed the little guys to pamper to the stars.

Howard was held hostage by the Rams with this tender and thus unable to hit the market. Now the market is dead the Rams let him go and don't have to pay him a cent. How can a union let a player get screwed this way?

These rfa tenders should be fully guaranteed. Hate how the little guys get screwed over so many times.

Absolutely agree. I have never understood why 80% of players who are low-mid level earners agree to contracts that favour the top earners.

They are converting Jake Gervase from safety to ILB. He's a lot faster and quicker than Howard. Howard had issues with situational awareness. Perhaps the most glaring was him trying to run after a game-winning INT. Gaines had to chase him down and tackle him to make sure he didn't fumble. That is unacceptable, as a former Charger fan, I've seen that too many times. After he made the INT I was screaming at the TV for him to get down. It wasn't the first time his head wasn't in the game. It's why he wasn't the starter at MLB.

The cap savings will probably allow them to sign OBJ.
Couple things I disagree with here, not holding my breath on Gervase, in the few times I've seen him even at linebacker, his coverage is not good and he misses tackles by taking bad angles. Also as far as the interception and I understand the Charger reference, but Howard was tackled immediately by Gaines, he really didn't have much of a chance. Would he have gone down on his own? We don't know, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, plus he made a key interception against the Vikings too.

Overall, if Howard does not come back, I believe the Rams like Anthony Hines Texas A&M and Jake Hummel Iowa State at ILB too. Hines has the size at 6'3 226lbs and Hummel was a tackling machine at Iowa State. I still hope that Howard actually comes back at a lower salary, but I concur with @Memento I believe another team will come calling.

I was surprised that they kept Gervais on the practice squad after the terrible preseason he had.

I guess he had some special teams value.

Agree with Den's comments above. I really liked Howard's athleticism. Unlike Reeder, he was a good open-field-tackler. You guys remember the play before his interception against the Niners?

Figured Howard was clearly behind Wagner and Jones but provided insurance in case of injury. As long as Wagner and Jones stay healthy, the Rams should be fine at off-ball-ILB.

The legit negative/criticism regarding Howard was durability; and a $2.54M cap-hit for a player that would mostly play Special Teams in the absence of injury.

Well, hostage is a little harsh. Any team could have signed him as a FA and only would have cost a 7th round pick. Still though, I agree that it ought to be a guaranteed contract like the franchise tag is

Over 2 million per for your 3rd ILB and special teams guy is a bit much. But we should try to bring him back at a lower number, he's a solid player, he's been in the system, and although Bobby has been durable, he's an older player, and Jones missed some time last year. We need a back up that can start if one of them go down, and Rozenboom ain't the guy....neither is the UDFA we signed...and moving Rapp or Gervase to ILB isn't the move either.

IF Travin can get more money somewhere, that's great for him...and we could find a guy for our 3rd ILB at a reasonable price...

There are a few names out there

I'm definitely glad he is coming back. I always thought he was pretty damn talented and proved it with several huge plays.
