Putting player control in a first time NFL coach coming from college with little to no NFL experience is a blunder a few teams makes. Lucky the Rams didn't do that. I remember a few hot college names when we hired McVay. Thankfully I doubt they ever got player control, unless it was prying Harbaugh away from Michigan.

The Rams’ running game has been abysmal this season, The team ranked dead last in the NFL with an average of 62.4 yards per game. As their starting running back, Akers has been at the forefront of that in what is on track to be his worst statistical year yet. Through five games, Akers has just 151 yards rushing, one touchdown, and is averaging a sad 3.0 yards per rush.

The Rams running game failures isn’t all on Akers, and McVay admitted as much in his press conference Friday. However, things are not going to get any better if the team continues to throw him out there each week. If things have soured to the point where Akers is traded or cut, Los Angeles must address their running back issues immediately to at least stay in the running for the division title, before they can further ponder trying to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Khalil Herbert has impressed this season filling in for David Montgomery. That, mixed with the fact that the 2019 third-round pick is set to become a free agent is more than enough reason for the Chicago Bears to open up dialogue on trades. Obviously, Montgomery is not the player McCaffrey is, but he certainly could take his game to another level under McVay and would come at a far cheaper rate.

Antonio Gibson, Washington Commodes​

With Brian Robinson back on the field and taking over the starting job for the Washington Commodes in Week 6, last season’s starter Antonio Gibson is expendable. Losing your job isn’t a great sign, but the Commodes are a mess, and rushing for over 1,000 yards for the organization last year clearly shows there is serious upside in him. Washington is in the midst of another lost season and could be looking to make movs before Nov. 2 and the Rams should inquire about the 2020 third-round NFL draft pick.

McCaffrey would be very affordable this year but the next three years of his deal balloon to $12+ million. With his injury history despite how well he plays when he's rarely been healthy that's a very tough pill to swallow for a cash strapped team the next three years.

David Montgomery costs more than twice as much this year but would be a free agent after the season so makes more sense, if we have the cap for him.

Gibson is also cheap and has one more relatively cheap year. But you have to wonder what's going on with a guy who rushed for 1k yards and caught 42 passes yet lost his job without an injury. Makes you wonder about him and his 3.5 ypc.

Montgomery is pretty good. Not sure why he's been out as I don't follow the Bears but the kid replacing him is not in his class. Gibson is probably the best choice of the three, he's a year younger than Montgomery and with backs mileage matters. Similar run style, both are good fits for McVay's style preference though both might look like shit behind our OL.

McCaffrey reeks of a Snead/McVay move and he's amazing of course when he's healthy. But given the injury problems with this backfield I think he's a poor choice. That said he is the guy of the three who might come into this offense and show out in a big way because he's so good in the pass game.

You don't get a RB for cheap at midseason if he doesn't have some flaws. So guys who have injury history, aren't seeing the holes well, have fumbles, etc are par for the course.

This is why you want to draft a fucking RB who can help you instead of fish for ones midseason. And it's even more glaring when you end up trading for the physical types you turn your nose up at in the draft. Because the previous two RBs we added were both very physical (Anderson and Michel).

That stuff happens to good backs. Just like good QBs miss WRs wide open in the endzone.

And btw I am not calling Cam a good back. But it's not something that I would flush him for. The bigger problem is him not impressing McVay and the staff with his prep. This has been bubbling.

Well, we're kind of assuming Cam is a cancer at that point. I'm not ready to go there. Regardless, a healthy Gurley would be hard pressed to produce behind this line... In this scheme. The ZBS needs the right players and I am not sure we have had those guys the last few years.

Agreed. We may just be seeing the fallout of him coming back from that injury a lesser version of who he was. He was definitely not the same guy last year when he returned. And so far this season he is not the same guy.

My whole deal with him is I don't know that we can judge him the way this OL has blocked. Some of his runs were an avalanche of guys in his face. But this is a quality coaching staff. So if Cam's fallen out of favor there is probably a good reason for it. And maybe he isn't ready to accept he's not the same guy, which can cause all kinds of problems too.

Bottom line is I trust McVay and his staff. But there's that voice in my head with this one, the spirit of the Jerome Bettis trade in fact, and he's whispering all kinds of nasty shit.
