With the brutal first half schedule, and Kupp possibly missing 4 games, and having the youngest team in the league…it’s not hard to see this team starting 1-5 or 2-6, and ultimately deciding to completely blow it up and start fresh. Stafford getting dealt before the 10/31 deadline feels like a very real possibility. Ben Solak mentioned this on his pod today and now that the Kupp news is official it doesn’t seem far fetched at all.

Only way this doesn’t happen is if some of the rookies pop and we start the season 4-2, 3-3, or something. But if we are 1-5, I cannot see them sending Stafford and Kupp out there every week on their way to a 5-12 finish. Especially if Stafford looks as good as all the training camp reports have suggested. If he is healthy, teams will want him and the Rams would be stupid not to get something for him.

If this team is 1-5, and Tua just got his 2nd concussion of the season, and the Dolphins are willing to send 2 second round and a third round pick for Stafford…it would be hard for Snead to say no.

Number 1, we've already done the teardown. That's why we're the youngest team in the league and why 14/14 2023 draft picks are on the final 53. We ate a shitload of dead cap and let a lot of free agents walk. The teardown part is complete.

Number 2, we are going into next season with about eleventy bajillion $$$ in cap space (you might want to check that figure for accuracy, but I know we have a lot). That's going to allow us to be playahz in the free agent market if we want to be. We'll use this season to figure out what holes we have and fill them pretty fast in the offseason.

Number 3, we also have a full complement of draft picks at the present, including a first rounder. That means we can either a) draft some premium talent next year, b) flip the pick in trade for another proven piece, as we have done in the past, or 3) I suck at indexing. Ok, that last one wasn't relevant. But still, with both a shitload of cap space and a full complement of draft picks, we will be able to fill a lot of holes very, very fast next offseason. McSnead didn't have nearly that much to work with in the 2017 offseason, yet we went from 4-12 bottom dwellers to 11-5 division champs in one year.

In the meantime, we are going to have a lot of young players get a lot of valuable reps/experience this season. That will naturally fill in at least a few holes. Not all of our new guys will make it, but almost certainly some of them will. And those guys will be around next year as well.

We also have a head coach and GM who have proven themselves to be able to turn this team around. This isn't like the Fisher era where we keep waiting and hoping we'll get over the hump, this is us on the other side of the hump now having gotten over it once (and reaching the summit) with the same guys in charge of getting us over it again.

So instead of "woe is us" before the first snap of the regular season, manage your expectations, sit back, and enjoy the process. Yes, there's going to be some bumpy road ahead, but there's also going to be a lot to look forward to. The teardown is over, we're on the upswing again, although it will take at least a year.

You know what would give the Rams even more cap space and flexibility? Having the starting QB on a rookie contract for the next 3-4 years.

You know what would make it harder for them to win? Downgrading from a proven elite QB that we currently have to someone who's not yet proven.

Thanks to the medicine we took this offseason, Stafford's contract isn't that big of an issue going forward.
