College football doesn't compare because there is almost no parity. There are only a few teams each year who have a solid chance of winning the championship. The rest of the schools basically field teams that are the equivalent of the Washington Generals.
The talent level isn't close to being even from school to school and it's getting worse now as conferences fight for their actual continued existence.
