Post draft, the Rams feel pretty small on defense. They are quick and disruptive but how are we going to match up against teams that want to run it right at us?

are there free agents out there that can solidify run D?

I was looking a bit at this today.

Shelby Harris is out there. As well as Poona Ford and Derrick Nnadi though they need bounce back type I guess that might make them cheaper.

I'm hoping Bobby Brown takes the leap.. massive guy who can make a difference.
They have soooooo many 3-tech types... maybe their idea against the run is just penetrate and disrupt.. but that sounds like a massive risk to explosive runs.

My concern also 12. Rams draft was "smallish" overall (Other than Avila), especially the defensive players they drafted. Only really big body run stuffer they have is Bobby Brown.

I mentioned this before the draft at the edge position. Some seemed to think it wouldn’t matter so much. I’m tired of the Niners running all over the Rams. Now it will be worse.

Yeah 1T really needs one solid player. If not then we replaced two good NTs with 3T/5T types. That would be a recipe for never being in third and long due to poor run defense.

We will have to do it a bit differently than we have over the past couple of seasons. Ashawn & Gaines are big bodies that are gone and took on most of the run-stopping/disrupting duties and really now we only have BB in that role as our NT, I think we add another big-bodied run-stuffer on the cheap and hope that some combination of Murchison, Turner, Copeland, Mathis, etc steps up against the run.

Don’t know what you’re thinking ?
I see The Rams defense differently, but yeah 9ers & SEAHAGs have The 2 best running games in The NFL looking ahead to 2023.

Really think The Rams are in a tough spot, but Raheem always seems to figure it out.

It's not about the size of the dog in the fight; it's the strength of the dog in the fight. AD proves that. Turner and Desjuan Johnson could learn a ton from AD about how to use leverage and strength to shed blockers.

So long as the players we draft have strength in their upper and lower body, it doesn't matter how big they are. I've seen Albert Haynesworth at 6'4", 330 lbs. get knocked off his ass. I've seen Aaron Donald throw offensive linemen around like they were little kids.

That's all that matters, really. So long as this defensive line can stack up like I think they can, they'll be fine against the run. Edges will have to keep contain, inside linebackers have to not miss tackles and plug in the holes, but I think they can.

Size matters. It can plug things up and anchor your run defense. If your small DTs are your anchor they're gonna get duo'd to create separation.

Both Gaines and Robinson could anchor vs doubleteams. Who does that now for us. Maybe Brown.

We are light in the pants at DT.

We aren’t just small at DT, either. We are small all over the defense. We are fast and we are tough and we have effort guys but on 3rd and short, we need to be able to anchor down. in Passing situations, we look pretty scary though.

lets hope the offense goes nuclear.

You think the Rams' defense will be able to get opponents to 3rd and short ... that's adorable.

When it comes to run defense, I think we'll miss Bobby Wagner as much if not more than Gaines or Big ARob.

Jones and Wagner were much better than solid ILB's last year and now its Jones with some scrub who's name escapes me.

Nothing worse in football than watching an opponent roll up huge rushing numbers on you.

Sometimes that is true, but sometimes SIZE truly matters and we have seen that with Donald on numerous occasions. 330lbs moves 285lbs every time, when they get their hands on you.

Here's last season's run defense by ypc. We're middle of the pack. Middle of the pack then subtract 2x good NTs and a good ILB. Draft brought in 3T types who might 5T for us. We're geared for pass rush clearly. Have to think a FA type addition is being worked on but I wouldn't be too leisurely with that if I'm Snead.

Christian Rozeboom and Jake Hummel are the other two off-ball-LBs on the roster right now.

I was hoping one or two of the UDFAs would be ILBs that I read about as draft-eligible but I am unfamiliar with the guys signed thus far.

Maybe Travin Howard re-signs. Small and not durable but was active and around the ball. There are some quality inside, off-ball LBs in the NFL that were late round picks or undrafted free agents. Fingers crossed.

I've had Hummel penciled in all along. Good range, good instincts, with a little more size hopefully this year.

What really matters is Jones playing well. He's the guy who will be on the field for all the snaps. But if Hummel can develop his game a bit he could give us that box safety type play and maybe stay on the field for more snaps than expected.
