Thanks for posting this. Love Kurt's analysis always! Such great videos. Not to focus on Goff but the play at 13:20 is exactly why Goff is no longer in LA. A 2 route progression and he doesn't see the wide open WR in the middle of the field for a chunk gain, and instead chooses to check down underneath. Inexcusable. 5 years in the NFL and still cant see this. The more film you see the more McVay's frustration makes sense.

Super excited to see all these elite concepts with Stafford at the helm. Also expect us to use more shotgun and 5 wide sets which is what Stafford ran a lot in Det. Should be a great blend and tough offense to stop this year.

Which play are you talking about. I did not see any play that he made the wrong throw.

The 4th play he might have been able to go deep but it was a much tougher throw than the easy short throw for an easy 20 yard play.

You are so anti-Goff that the littlest thing that Goff might have done wrong makes you bad mouth Goff.

All of the plays were designed to throw to the wide open man.

Maybe Stafford will throw to the deeper guy but I have seen him throw to the open guy going short too.

However, if he breaks from the pocket from being rushed, Stafford has been able to make a big play out of it.

Goff was never the guy who could make a play when the play breaks down.

So yes Stafford is an improvement over Goff in that area but Goff is a winner and has shown when given a lead by half time, he won't lose it for you.

I included the timestamp in my original post so you can go watch it again. It's clear as day and Kurt Warner, a HOF qb pointed it out how Goff missed the read. He even circled the wide open Reynolds and said "this should have been the throw." It was a 2 route progression, and Goff didn't even make it to his 2nd read who was wide open middle of the field for a chunk gain. He decided to check down to the RB when he wasn't even pressured. There's nothing to argue or discuss. This isn't an anti-Goff point of view. Its a fact, plain as day that was pointed out by Warner. And this is why Goff's yards per attempt was 32nd in the NFL. And this is why McVay shipped him out of LA. Stafford is a huge upgrade when it comes to the mental side of QBing. Reading a defense and going through progressions has never been a problem for him.

You can also see places where Tutu would fit in this offense. Not as a gadget player, but simply part of the rotation. Defenses will have to honor his speed and if they don't he's one missed tackle from taking to the house. This offense can be very dangerous again as the Rams have a QB that will read much faster and be more decisive in his throws. People make a lot of Jared's INTs and they should. But look at Matthew's INT % his first 5 years he averaged 2.8% while Goff's was 2.4%. It wasn't until Stafford's 8th year that he brought that average down.

Goff is a good QB, but not a good fit for this HC. It's why I think it was a win-win for both teams to make the trade.

Okay I didn't quite get to that play since I am at work and didn't look at the last play.

Yes Goff missed that read but the play still gained almost every yard that the deep throw would have made and it was a much safer play.

Goff saw that Akers/Henderson (didn't look closely) had an open field in front of him and went with the safer throw.

You are quibbling over 5 maybe 10 yards that the deeper throw would have made.

When I reviewed Goffs plays in several games this year, he made the possible wrong throw maybe 5 times a game.

Maybe you expect a QB to be perfect in every game. That's your call. I have no problem with a QB missing 5 throws a game since I have seen every QB miss 5 throws a game. (Edit - that should be make the wrong throw 5 times a game.)

The problem I did have with Goff is that he made a REALLY STUPID play a game (sometimes a few more like the Miami game) and I was hoping that he would stop doing that in his 6th year since that is the year most QBs stop making the really stupid plays.

But again - we now have Stafford so it doesn't matter anymore and he usually doesn't do a stupid play. He did make one against the Bears that lost the game for the Lions but other than that, he was usually in control. And Stafford is a much much more mobile QB and I think he will really fit McVay's game plan so as Old Not Dead said, this is a win win for both teams since Stafford is a much better fit for McVay's style of play.

Might? The man was about as wide open as it gets in the NFL. You best believe McVay would be frustrated with his QB chickening out or not seeing him like Goff did there. Bad habits like that can cost us a win as the game goes on.

Although I agree that Stafford > Goff, I don't wholeheartedly agree with Warner that this was a bad read. It wasn't OBVIOUS to me (even playing it back vs realtime) that he's open in the middle. There is a safety there that doesn't really turn his hips towards the other target until Goff has already started his dump off to Akers. If Goff chooses the tougher throw and that safety chooses differently, seems like a break up or pick to me.

The safer route/choice was Akers and he hit him with a full head of steam for big yards. I'd take that every day of the week!

At 5:00, Tutu is taking this to the house if we play him at Kupp's spot.

Was talking about the 4th play - he was not wide open on that one

The other play - well he was open and Goff could have thrown it but you are quibbling about 5 to 10 yards on a play that the running back gained almost 20 yards on

I went through all three of Warner’s breakdowns on Stafford. He has a lot of good to say about him but the last one he shows some of the iffy plays too.

It’s going to be fun to watch, hopefully he never gets forced into those iffy situations with this team.

Lol I guess it makes sense to disagree with a HOF QB when he's talking about reading defenses. But the way this play works is his first read is outside, then 2nd read is inside. His key on the play is the safety, and he was not under pressure from the pass rush. So there is absolutely no excuse not to get to his 2nd read in the progression. Not his 3rd, not his 4th. His 2nd read. He couldn't get to his 2nd read who was literally wide open. It's not a "tougher" throw. Its the correct throw in the context of that play. WRs dont get more wide open than that, the safety wasn't even close man. Not even close. The outcome of the play is irrelevant . Even if the RB took it to the house it still would've been the wrong decision. Based on the look, it should've gone to his 2nd read 100%. This is an area where Stafford excels. He doesn't have issues processing mentally like this. IMO Wolford showed an ability to go through his progressions better than Goff in 2 starts. Just watch their eyes man. Turn on the film and watch their eyes it's not hard to see.

What the hell happened to Goff? There was a video on RFU about the last time he played the vikes and he had 5 tds since he plays them twice a year now. He had games where you thought he was a top 3 qb and games he should get benched.

All qb’s make stupid plays, or what appear to fans to be “stupid” plays. Brady made a number of them last year. Stafford made one in Week 2 against top division rival Green Bay when he threw a pick six in the flat from maybe his own ten yard line that basically took Detroit out of the game. It happens.

Yeah but a couple of his were really really stupid

The Seattle throw and the not making faster decisions against Miami. He should have either made a really quick throw against Miami or thrown it away. After being blitzed like that for 2 times already, he should have at least seen the blitz on the other 5 times that Miami came.

i maybe wrong but to me if you go thru your reads and you pass on a wide open receiver to look at later reads and they are covered by the time you get back to first read that was open that one may be covered. it is the bird in the hand vs the two in the bush all though there is something to be said for anything in the bush.
