Sean McVay isn’t done building out his staff, even with the season rapidly approaching. After practice on Thursday, McVay told reporters that he hired former Washington coach Jay Gruden as a consultant for the Rams.
Gruden was out in Cincinnati for the two days of joint practices, but McVay said he’ll be working remotely. McVay and Gruden have a long-standing relationship that dates back to their time together in Tampa Bay.

McVay and Gruden were both on Jon Gruden’s staff with the Buccaneers in 2008, each working as offensive assistants. From 2014-2016, McVay worked on Jay Gruden’s staff when Gruden was the head coach. McVay was the tight ends coach from 2011-2013, but Gruden kept him on in 2014 as his offensive coordinator.
Gruden was last with the Jaguars as their offensive coordinator in 2020, but he was let go along with Doug Marrone after the season ended.

Jay's son and my son played on the same HS football team. I used to sit next to him during practices and games. At that time he was coaching the Orlando Predators (arena league football).

The dude obviously knows football... especially offense. Sometimes I felt like I was in football graduate school when he would share his insight on our sons' games and practices. That was the neat part.

There was a bad part to sitting next to him during that 1st practice though... because after that, he would literally seek me out and sit right next to me every time. It was cool at first... but then it basically turned into a nightmare. Jay thinks A LOT of himself and while he did share excellent football knowledge with me... that football knowledge was sprinkled in between COUNTLESS stories about himself. Plus... his wife was even worse in that department.

I'm glad to read that Jay is only going to be working remotely for The Rams.

Getting his friend back working even if it's in a limited basis so next year he can at worst get an OC job. Just my opinion on the hire.

Haha.

I have a similar situation with Randy White who goes to my gym.

Dude goes on and on about stories with me every day. While they are interesting and usually funny, I know my workout is not going to happen once he gets started. He’s actually real nice guy though.

So when Coen gets a HC job, they can slide Gruden right in there and will never have to worry about an OC poached ever again....

Interesting. Hmm.

The more input the better, I guess.

Well that hire is interesting. I can almost imagine how that conversation went. I bet Sean was expecting to talk to a Gruden (pick one) at some point.

Well since we are name dropping, I went to art school with Mike Singletary’s younger brother, Charles. He was humble, very reserved and enjoyed drawing comic super-heroes. Kinda unexpected I thought. He said his brother Mike was intense. No kidding.

Maybe McVay thinks Coen needs help on offense.

No, I don't think so. Because he's remote he's probably more giving feedback and watching tape (Looking for tells, etc.), as opposed to being in the day-to-day operations.

McVay has a lot of confidence in Coen, which Coen has earned.

And to think Jay is the less douchey brother.....

I would be curious if he is looking and evaluating talent, the Rams performances or upcoming opponents.....or a mix of all of it.

Gruden working remotely, but it gets him back out there. Now that gives him an opportunity to become an OC for somebody next year as I don't believe he would take the job with the Rams because McVay calls the plays, but with all the OC's being given jobs under McVay especially if Liam Coen gets one, you might see Jay Gruden as the next OC in L.A., however, more likely to be paired with a defensive coach who gets a head coaching gig.

I absolutely love this because mcvay as we have seen can sometimes try and force stuff but having both those guys and one from above remotely I absolutely love it. For many reasons. Very smart

Raheem Morris might need an OC when he gets a HC gig next year. Makes too much sense to not happen IMO
