At the suggestion of Dieterbrock I thought I would start a running thread for fellow runners. I have been running for a little more than three years. I enjoy adventure racing as well as regular races. I have my second full marathon on Sunday 3/1 in Little Rock Arkansas and as I mentioned the largest marathon medal out there. Last year a race in Texas topped Little Rock medal so they made a bigger one for this year.

Races:
3 - 1/2 Marathons
1 - Full Marathons (soon to be 2)
3 - Warrior Dashes
2 - Tough Mudders

I'd love to read about distance runners and their races.

I used to love running for pleasure too, but those days are long gone. Ran some 5 and 10K's, but I don't remember the times.

I love running. Never been particularly fast but that's why its a great sport. It's all about personal satisfaction.
I ran nyc marathon last fall when a messed up Achilles kept me from properly training. Heck I barely trained at all. But it was such a satisfying race. Maybe My most satisfying even though it wasn't even close to a pr
Right now I'm not really running much as the Achilles hasn't healed but I look forward to training as soon as it's good.
I've completed 5 marathons and maybe 6 or 7 half marathons.

Thanks. My goal is 4 hours 20 minutes but I have had a rough time training. I had a stretch of three runs where I really felt like I was hitting my stride then I got sick and now I have tendinitis in my Achilles so I have really had to dial back the training. Though I don't think I am going to hit my goal I am going to try and improve on my 4 hour 45 minute I posted last October. My best 1/2 was 1 hour and 43 minutes.

I'd like to run the NYC and Boston marathons or at least the half some day. Now that I have run a full I am pretty sure I am a half marathon type of man. There is a Las Vegas run that you do at night. I think that would be pretty cool.

Who knew Mongo was a marathon runner. Good luck on that man. I only run when I might be late for happy hour.

Thanks. Got to do more than just punch a horse. :)

I got into it a couple of years ago because the people I worked with ran at lunch and I needed to get into shape. My buddy and I also started to get into the adventure running. Started with the warrior dash. That is only a 5k and it felt like I was a kid playing army in woods. I had a blast. The next year we did the tough mudder. I really enjoy doing them.

I just actually started running after finally quitting smoking 6 months ago. Mostly just tread mill right now, but did go up to local track yesterday and did a little over 2 miles there. Gotta say it is alot different than running on a treadmill

Which do you prefer? I am an outdoor runner.

The treadmill is torture to me. Its boring....I start looking at how long I have been running at about 2 minutes.
We have one at home but mostly used to hang wet laundry on.

have only run outside 1 time so far, and it was cold and windy and too many puddles LOL.

Started running a few weeks ago on the Wii Fit Plus...basically running in place for awhile while your character runs around on the tv screen. Distance on that thing is way off from real life, because I was able to do a little over 4 miles in 20 minutes with the Wii. Then I moved up to a rickety old tread mill that has been in our basement for about 5-7 years. No distance tracker or anything, I would just set my timer for 20 minutes and go. Yesterday the temp hit above freezing here for the first time since I started running, so I went to the local park, which used to be an old Naval air strip during WWII. so it is nice and flat, and also where my first 5k will be run at the end of March..if I make it until then LOL

Yesterday ran 2.01 miles in 22:42 ...a little slow but I will get there

Watch that achilles man. Holy smokes I dont know if mine will ever heal
You ran a 1:43 half marathon? Thats pretty darned good. Seems like youre selling yourself short with a 4:20 goal
Most training guides predict a 26.2 time is your 13.1 X 2 plus 10-20 minutes. Even on the high side I think you can break 4 hours.

New York was the most amazing experience. Crowds were 5-6 deep the whole way around cheering and screaming like I was a Kenyan. lol
My dream is to run Boston. My goal is to qualify in 7 years when I'm 54 and the qualifying time is 3:40.
There are some pretty incredible races. I've run the Walt Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 marathon a couple times. It goes off at 10 PM and you start at the ESPN complex, run to, and thru the Animal Kingdom then to and thru Hollywood Studios, then to and finish at Epcot.
Was so cool running at night.

You give me too much credit sir. That half was a year aand a half ago and I was in better shape. Due to illness and injury I haven't been able to train like I would have hoped I could. I have been relegated to the bike for past couple of weeks to give it a rest so I can run without serious damage.

That Walt Disney run sounds like fun. There is a Bourbon run in Kentucky that is a 200 mile relay race that I want to do some day.

Yeah, be careful for sure. I cant get my heel to heal. I trained for NYC on limited miles and basically trained on long runs to find a pace that would allow me to run until the achilles/calf cramped up and finally seized. Only was able to do a handful of 18 milers.

@Goose

Good luck tomorrow man!!

Thanks Dieter. Well I made it back alive to tell the tale. It was cold and wet. The guy that designed this course is a real a$$hole. From mile 23.5 to 25 it was all up hill and I am talking steep climbs. I was not very happy. I finished in 4 hours 56 min without any major injury and my Achilles is feeling fine. So although I didn't do as well as I wanted it was probably the best outcome I could have hoped for. Unfortunately due to shipping issues we wont' get our huge ass medal until late March. I would not recommend this race. I was really dissappointed with how it was organized and run. Oh well at least now I get some well earned downtime until my next race.

Congrats @Goose

Any tips for beginners you guys care to share. When I first set out I seem to have a hard time setting a good tempo and really have to slow down and tend to struggle to finish. Did a 3 mile run/walk today and my pace was all over the place

Thanks Rhody. I would make sure you get a good pair of running shoes that you only use for running. This is going to help you prevent injuries. There are some apps for your phone to track pace. I have a garmin watch that I love to use. That really helped me force myself to slow down. I used Hal Higdon's plan when I started out and that worked out well for me.

Best tip you can follow re:pace is to not worry about pace, dont worry about mileage.
Set a goal for amount of time, say 30 minutes.
For the first 10 minutes, no matter how comfortable the pace feels, slow down
After 10 you can push your pace a little, see how the body feels. If you run on a track, maybe run a lap with 20% more effort, then slow back to starting pace. If you run on the street, maybe pick out a stop sign up ahead, and run to it. Never push where you feel you're effort is more than 20%. Do that for 10 minutes.
Finish with 10 more minutes at the beginning slow pace, take a 1 minute walk break or two in there.
The goal isnt pace, its about training your body to stay in motion for that 30 minute time frame. Its not a 100 yard dash so keep the strides as short as possible. You dont want to make long strides, but as many short ones as you can

But before any of it, do what Goose said. Get running shoes that you only use for running. If possible, go to a running store and have them look at your gait and let them recommend a shoe for you. If you have a Roadrunner sports near you, they will do an analysis on a treadmill, but a true running store is better. You'll pay more for shoes there, but its a one time gig, at least you know what shoe to buy.

Shoes are so important, and its not by brand. Be wary of the "expert" who says, you should wear "Brooks because they're the best". Or Nike, New Balance etc... Its not the brand thats important its matching a shoe model based on how your foot lands.

ok, I'll get off the soap box lol
