Best tip you can follow re
ace is to not worry about pace, dont worry about mileage.
Set a goal for amount of time, say 30 minutes.
For the first 10 minutes, no matter how comfortable the pace feels, slow down
After 10 you can push your pace a little, see how the body feels. If you run on a track, maybe run a lap with 20% more effort, then slow back to starting pace. If you run on the street, maybe pick out a stop sign up ahead, and run to it. Never push where you feel you're effort is more than 20%. Do that for 10 minutes.
Finish with 10 more minutes at the beginning slow pace, take a 1 minute walk break or two in there.
The goal isnt pace, its about training your body to stay in motion for that 30 minute time frame. Its not a 100 yard dash so keep the strides as short as possible. You dont want to make long strides, but as many short ones as you can
But before any of it, do what Goose said. Get running shoes that you only use for running. If possible, go to a running store and have them look at your gait and let them recommend a shoe for you. If you have a Roadrunner sports near you, they will do an analysis on a treadmill, but a true running store is better. You'll pay more for shoes there, but its a one time gig, at least you know what shoe to buy.
Shoes are so important, and its not by brand. Be wary of the "expert" who says, you should wear "Brooks because they're the best". Or Nike, New Balance etc... Its not the brand thats important its matching a shoe model based on how your foot lands.
ok, I'll get off the soap box lol
