Rams' offensive line still a major problem after Week 5

I will say this about our interior Oline. They can’t get much push in the run game and may cripple our run game all year. But as pass protectors they are more than serviceable. Pass pro is mainly about assignment and slowing guys down.

So much of what our new offensive lineman learn is through repetition, reviewing the tape and making adjustments in the classroom and coaching on the field during practice.

And thank the football gods that we finally have some good offensive line coaches.

Those coaches are what's going to make this thing work in the long run.

I'm pretty sure their first priority will be defensive tackle or run stopping linebacker.
I would actually be surprised if they used a pick on an offensive lineman before the third round.
Running back may be more of a priority.

Every team right now has trouble protecting and every quarter back is having to get the ball out lightning fast or get his face planted.

If you can get through a game with no sacks, that’s pretty awesome.

I’ll just put it out there that we had no sacks this week.

If you can get through a game with no sacks, that’s pretty awesome.

True that. But there was significant pressure at times on stunts and such where immediate pressure required Goff to get the ball off too early resulting in incompletion or near pick.

Our pass pro is by no means Elite but with Goffs ability to sense pressure and escape at times, it will suffice to put up points with this group.

Run game is not going get any better with this group. The Interior doesn't have the strength to push people around like Sully and Saffold could.

Allen better at pass pro then Sullivan but not as good as a run blocker.

Noteboom about equal to Saffold in pass pro but no where near the run blocker.

So run blocking drops off, pass pro a tad better IMO.

Have they struggled yes. But are they as bad as PFF (Professional Fraud F*******) say they are? No.

This o-line is new, and their execution is not where it needs to be. But execution is correctable. Lack of talent isn't. They have 3 guys playing out of position at both OG and RT. Boom is an OT and Blythe is a backup. I think it was a mistake to not play a new o-line in preseason. They needed live game action to get their communication and cohesiveness together. They could have played with Bortles and Henderson in the backfield and they have tons of depth at WR.

This has been their preseason. They played a very tough opponent and the o-line played well enough to win that game. So why all the doom and gloom?

The problem isn't with the o-line right now. It's at both CB's, with Talib showing his age and Peters not playing the scheme. Christian is strictly a ST's player and has always been a very poor safety. His play was exposed with Rapp out. Time to see if Scott can play better, if nothing else he has much better speed giving him much better range. Or time to release Christian and sign Gervase to the active roster. Christian has marginal speed for a DB and it shows.

They have better talent on the team than they have been showing. Time to turn the dogs loose.

Our nickel CB Robey-Coleman makes $6M.

If you calculate the $ per snap difference, it’s a huge disparity.

But the point is they haven’t yet, and there’s a reason why they’re the lowest paid interior OL in the NFL (true). Two of them are young and inexperienced, and not high picks. The other is an average at best UFA. Blythe is the highest paid guy, making $2M, there are 50 guards making more.

The Rams made a conscious choice to save money on the OL and hope they could coach these guys up to play decently. They aren’t surprised that these guys have struggled early in the season, neither am I.

It is surprising to me how much Havenstein has struggled. That’s really exacerbated the OL problem.

Add it all up, and you get a QB with an 83.0 passer rating. And a 3-2 record.

yeah, i thought they would be better. put one of them in next to the others last season and the line didn't miss a beat. put two of them in together and it's a little harder for them.

but the season is still young and they have plenty of time to gel and get better before the playoffs.

In terms of value, the OL is the least worrisome aspect of this team, even though they were the largest contribution to the stuttering offense.

If this were a Jeff Fisher team, the results of taking such a huge gamble with the offensive line would be far worse.

But there are some contradictory aspects of personnel investment (value) that don't mesh. Like paying Gurley what they did without keeping a top run blocking line intact.

Fowler wasn't a bad signing, but at the expense of Saffold, it just doesn't make sense to me when you consider the investment in other areas of the offense, but I guess it all works out in the name of balance?

But finally, to your point, the value of defensive players just does not match current performance, and that has been problematic for the win/loss column.
