Rams do not see much free-agency movement on Thursday

By Gary Klein

http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-rams-nfl-free-agency-20160311-story.html

After a frenetic opening day to free agency, it was mostly quiet Thursday -- at least outwardly -- for the Rams.

A day after unrestricted free-agent cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod joined other teams, and safety/linebacker Mark Barron and defensive end William Hayes re-signed with the Rams, there have been no major moves.

Running back Benny Cunningham, a restricted free agent who received an original-round tender from the Rams, reportedly visited the New England Patriots on Thursday.

The Rams have the right of first refusal if Cunningham receives an offer sheet from another team. There would be no compensation for the Rams if Cunningham signs elsewhere.

Cunningham tweeted about his trip to New England. "Back In Nashville.. Visit went great and I really enjoyed the hospitality.. All around great experience #FirstClass #GreatOrganization"

Defensive linemen Eugene Sims and Nick Fairley, kicker Greg Zuerlein, tight end/fullback Cory Harkey, and receiver Wes Welker are unrestricted free agents.

The Rams also are waiting to see what offers, if any, quarterback Case Keenum receives. The Rams offered Keenum, an restricted free agent, the first-round tender of about $3.6 million.

If Keenum receives an offer sheet from another team, and the Rams choose not to match it, the Rams would be awarded a first-round draft pick as compensation if Keenum signs with the other team.

The Rams are regarded as possible landing spots for other quarterbacks through free agency, trades or the draft.

Robert Griffin III was released by the Washington Redskins and is searching for a new employer. The New York Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick is an unrestricted free agent.

Brian Hoyer of the Houston Texans and Mark Sanchez of the Philadelphia Eagles could possibly be traded after their teams signed Brock Osweiler and Chase Daniel, respectively.

The Rams have the 15th pick in the draft.

What an outstanding piece of journalism...I had no idea it was a slow day of FA action for the Rams...Thanks, LA Times...Still the quality publication it was in the 60's...I got more info back then from the Burbank Daily Review...

When are these LA Times articles going to actually start having some meat to them ha?

I have been thinking about this one. What if the Broncos say screw it we want Keenum and risk the pick. Would the Rams really not sign him? They would be left with Foles and Mannion. If they did then that actually means they think Mannion is a capable starter........or they are fooling themselves into Foles again.

Good question, if it was me, I would give Keenum up for a first rounder in a minute. Just on pure value, a 1st rounder has more upside than Keenum IMO. How much drop off is there? Keenum is nothing more than a backup IMO.

Defensive linemen Eugene Sims and Nick Fairley, kicker Greg Zuerlein, tight end/fullback Cory Harkey, and receiver Wes Welker are unrestricted free agents.
In order of priority for myself:
1) Fairley
Depth is needed there if we want to continue dominating up front.

2) Sims
I'm a big continuity guy so with the loss of Long and the questions surrounding the Mighty Quinn i'd like to have Sims back if the price is right. He's a great fit as a 29 yr old rotational vet. That and i like the way he plays the game, much like Willy Hayes.

3) Harkey
One of my favorite players who doesn't get enough looks and touches on offense IMO. Tough as nails too.

4) I wouldn't be against kicking the tires again on Welker but that depends on what the WR core looks like after training camp.

5) Not concerned about bringing Zuerlein back. We can do better via FA or draft.

Still it would be a bold move. So would moving trading to number 1. I would do it.

tough call for me. Not that he is irreplaceable but I'd rather sign him and bring in competition.

Zuerlein has definitely become polarizing among us fans. I hope at the very least your're right and Fisher follows up with his comments and brings in some legit competition vs Greg this summer.

Speaking for myself of-course I am thrilled that the Rams have stayed clear of the Free Agency Frenzy Feeding Fight. I would liken it to a Friday after getting paid drunken party night the aftermath is usually a sound reminder that you were just plain stupid but it sure felt good early on. Now you have to pay for your big mistakes & they are usually very costly:death:.

Rams would have 2 first rd picks & 2 second rd picks to utilize if desired to move up to attain either Wentz or Goff? Or just use the very valuable draft selections to secure the best possible cheap youthful talent available. Looks like a win win to me either way. My hope is that Denver offers Case Keenum the job there.

First #15
First #31
Second #43
Second #45

Of our remaining UFA's I still have interest mainly with FB Cory Harkey but FB's can be had for a minimum just about at any Dollar Store. But I would move Cory up the LOS to take Lance Kendricks 2015 place. I would utilize Justice & Zack in place of Cory @ fullback. I am sure Cory will be better as the 2nd TE than Lance was last season.

Now that we have signed both DE Wm Hayes & WSLB'er Mark Barron I see no need to pay premium price for DE Eugene Sims(offers ZERO in the pass-rush). Westbrooks/Longacre/Quinn/Hayes is a solid four DE's. OSLB'er Akeem Ayers could move into a 3rd down pass rushing specialist easy enough since Mark is back. I not paying big $$$for a back up DT in Fairley. DT's are jammed full in this draft & will be low hanging ripe fruit for the pickings.

They'd probably use the first to trade up into the top 10 or select Connor cook at 32

Probably why Fairley isn't being sought after as aggressively as some here thought he would be.

I hope not Cook. I really don't think he will be a good Qb. Jrry nearly had me convinced but the more I read and watch the less I like.

Bold only because you are giving up your starting QB. Just my humble opinion, but if we are starting and going with Keenum for the upcoming year we are a what....7 to 9 win team? We start Mannion....we are about a 7 to 9 win team? I have no problem with Keenum as a backup, I just dont think he is the solution for our starting job.

I don't either. But right now it is about what is the best of what they got. Seems their decision is Keenum. Great point on Mannion btw. He probably gets them the same record so why not just go with him? At some point they should see what they have in him.......unless they think they know what they have in him. But they thought that about Foles too. I don't have a good feeling about the short or long term outcome of this QB situation. I hope that changes on day 1 of the Draft.
