Bennett needs reps. He hasn't played much over the past few years. The Rams have 4 QBs on the roster. Mathew Caldwell is 4th on depth as a camp arm. He has not had practice snaps reported when I looked it up. McVay has to balance QB playing time and keep them healthy. It's a guessing game at this point as to playing time. I guess that it a combination of McVay knowing Bennett needs more reps and reassure he is ready to be the backup QB.

Preseason vs. Regular Season Action
    • Regular Season: 0 games played, 0 snaps.
    • Preseason: 7 games played (6 starts), 1,296 passing yards, 8 touchdowns. [1, 2, 3]
For me and I don't know why, but every time Stetson Fleming Bennett IV drops back to pass I think the worse is going to happen. What I hope to see is the ability to drive the field, make plays on the run and limit the mistakes. Then and only then, will I entertain the thought of him being the backup QB. Although he had never attempted as pass in the regular season.

A good decision. I think this truly might mean one of 2 things:
1. Bennett and Simpson are both vying for the #2 slot
2. Bennett has not shown enough for McVay to be happy about him being the back up. Thus if he looks terrible in preseason, maybe G-String gets a call.
As soon as Simpson was drafted, the #2 was up for grabs. It's not like Bennett was the #2 for years, he was #3. Both have to earn it, and honestly it's expected that the a first round QB would be the #2, like Mendoza in Vegas.

If the Rams weren't Super Bowl contenders I would have expected and would have bet the house that Simpson would be the #2 QB whether he deserved it or not. But legit Super Bowl contenders don't have time to wait for a rookie QB to develop.

Same applies to Stetson. Is he developed?

Rams had no intention of making Simpson the QB2. The Rams couldn't give 2 shits about the outside expectations that a 1st round pick should at least be QB2. Look at all there picks over the last 3 years and you will notice they all have a lot of college football playing time. That has been a requirement. Now for their most important position they are going to expect Simpson to be ready to run the team at a moments notice when he only has 1 season? If the shit hits the fan he might have to, but that has never been the plan.

I concur with that. Here are highlights from his play against the Renters from last year's preseason game. He made some nice throws. He also made some bad throws into coverage. He needs to improve his awareness and judgment. He is not the first QB to be suckered by a lineman dropping back into coverage for an interception. There were two more that easily could have been intercepted. The Chargers blitzed and generated good pressure. He did drive the ball downfield with some solid throws. He has to show improvement.

Just noticed something after looking at the QB depth charts of the rest of the league.

Common sense should have told me that since there are not 32 quality starting QBs in the NFL there wouldn't be many quality backups.

There MIGHT be a handful of very good backup QBs.

lol...

i was watching that preseason game live, and remember saying...

"i don't believe what i just saw"...

it kinda makes me think bennett might not be the worst thing for a second string backup...

is JG that much better??... could he have pulled that game out??

let's see the decision after the preseason...

bennett or simpson?... i think bennett

some guys can just pull it off, and bennett looks like one of those...

go rams

slo

The good backups are starters on some teams.

McVay said Whittington and Mumpfield will not play in the preseason.
Wow, McVay determined to make the preseason even more boring this year. I agree with his decision about not risking injury, but man, it's gonna be all bottom of the roster guys.

Wife and I are coming up on 37 years married, 40 years together and even more as friends before that.

She’s a Rams fan as well and doesn’t like the 9ers (for several reasons). She’s an absolute keeper, I won the lottery with her and while I dunno how many parallel universes there are in the multiverse, I know I’m living in the best one cuz we’re married in this one.
