That post about Byron Young was written on October 31st when he was tearing up the league and the pundits were claiming he might make 40 or 50 million per year. Since then, however, his play has not been quite as good so maybe the Rams can sign his for less.
Been saying and saying he benefits from protections going towards Verse. His contain is elite I think. But his actual rush potency is median at best. Love the effort, but you don't pay dudes for contain. Not even when he's by far the best at it on your roster.

So he'll either take a reasonable contract, or he'll go chase something he won't be able to earn.

The 4th lowest? Just add that to another incredible season that ended with a playoff loss. 1973 we lost 2 games by a total of 3 points.
Back to back losses too.
The 11 point loss to Dallas in the playoffs really stung

Ouch......still think a lot of defensive changes should be made. Liked Shula early on, but he's been figured out. We need more scheme, more creativity, and most importantly more secondary talent so we can apply said schemes.
Disagree on the figured out. Lake went out and it hurt from production but I think once he came back they never recovered. Hopefully we have more talent back there next year.

That's ok if we disagree lol however I also saw Lake get abused when he came back. You don't just give up that many points to Seattle if they don't have the defense figured out. Guess I'm just not a huge fan of this bend don't break philosophy our D has. One thing I do wish that would happen would be for AD to take every single D lineman and have them work out with him daily. Get their asses much stronger hahaha..... totally agree about hoping we had secondary talent.

The only thing they needed to figure out was we have nobody to cover JSN. We lack a CB1 and have for a long time.

We were remarkably close to beating Seattle in their home twice for a team who's defense was figured out.

I wonder if we go back and look at all our defenses sacks how many could be attributed to coverage sacks. Just an idle thought I had.

There's that old theory, you want a franchise QB and a couple of #1 WRs? You gotta pay them (and though we paid Adams and didn't pay Puka this year, we did pay Kupp $22.6 mil :wow2: ). That doesn't leave a lot of room for paying 2 shutdown corners like Surtain and Sauce Gardner. The only way to get that is draft the WR (Puka) and the CBs and have them all on their rookie contracts. But eventually, you gotta pay them. Of course there are other ways to get that all wrapped up in a nice package but it don't last long.

I think we need to see what Shula does once we have another off season, where we will certainly have a handful of new starters and key contributors.
We ran stuntz all the time and yes that film circulated which decreased the efficiency of stunting.

We ran the stuntz because blitzing was high risk with our back end being our weakness and unable to hold up.
Of course you still have to be able to surprise and do the unexpected but we were very limited with our options.
We don't have an ILB that blitzed much nor did any of our DB's. While blitzing we are super susceptible to easy completions in our zone coverage if the rush doesn't get home.

We just didn't have the personnel to do much more than stunt.
Next season will be very different, there is no way they didn't see what we saw and the response to the problem validated it's existence.
when remaining the same exceeds the pain of change you will change.....expect it!

Totally agree that we need a CB1 and it's so baffling why we ignored the area but here we are. Unfortunately I think we need more than that. We need a CB1 and another corner with length. I know you mentioned Taylor and that is definitely possibility if we get a CB1 before him. Biggest concern I have with him is just making sure that we don't break the bank for him. JSN definitely abused us more than we needed to be, however I saw a lot of open receivers in our soft zone as well. Maybe you're right and maybe the type of coverage we play may change with the CB1. I'd also say I want a true middle linebacker that can play from sideline to sideline and cover the pass for the underneath stuff.

There are not many out there.

Serious Question.

Was there anyone out there, that was available and gettable that you had in mind?

I agree with the thought that a quality #1 CB would be ideal.

I don’t agree with the thought that the Rams ‘ignored the area’.

By ignoring the area I'm more so referring to the draft. They didn't ignore depth and trusted the players that they had already and knew. We all thought they should have targeted a cornerback with that first pick, but even then they didn't draft one at all. That's the part I'm talking about the most. I personally think the Rams became hesitant to trade for one at the deadline because Witherspoon was going to come back. Unfortunately he got reinjured very quickly.

We need to draft a cb and sign a non marquee FA if possible. Teams don't often let #1 CB's get away and the market is thin.
Use 13

That’s a reasonable thought.

I took a quick look at the CBs selected at the end of Round One (if the Rams had not traded out); and those drafted in the Second Round, where the Rams took Ferguson.

Not sure that I see any that would have made a difference this season. Maybe Trey Amos who went to Washington late in the 2nd.

But I understand the thought.

Rookie contracts are cheap. Also did I say pay 2 vet shutdown CB? Also Puka is on a rookie deal, the way contracts work if we signed a CB1 a couple years ago we'd have money for Puka.

I have never said we needed 2 Surtwins or Gardners on the roster so stop making stuff up. With the payroll attributed to our defense I don't understand this notion that we ca.t upgrade a vote spots on D.
