Two reasons.

First the Fowler piece from this morning. It said the main reason the Rams were so quiet about their interest in Simpson is because they didn’t think anyone else but Arizona had any interest in him as a first round player. But they knew once other teams realized Snead and McVay viewed him that way, everyone else would be after him too.

And second the number of people who are extremely plugged in that said Simpson was falling to the 2nd round if the Rams didn’t take him. I saw both Daniel Jeremiah and Albert Breer make that claim today. Ian Rappaport said that the Cardinals were deciding last night if they’d have to trade up to 30 or 31 to land Simpson, or if they’d thought he’e still be there at 34.
Most people that Are plugged in said no way we would pick him. They didn't know jack squat.

Disagree. It's an important metric in evaluating any QB coming out in the draft. Not something you want to ignore. Going into the selection, and knowing what you're getting into in that regard, is valuable.

Simpson could very easily end up a backup QB at this level. He's got a lot to prove. He gives me Bulger vibes tbh, in that I liked how Bulger could win from the pocket (big element for me), also Bulger had smooth mechanics and was very intelligent. But on the other side as things break down he doesn't handle shit well. And as you consider that library of games he's actually started, you realize he's living on a lot of projection.

I think what McVay prioritized here is the fact Simpson can actually run his offense. And he's got the raw tools. He has some film where he's reading and making anticipation throws and the like. That stuff is valuable. But the sample size looms there, and we're not gonna see if he can sustain a high level of play until down the road when he gets a shot. At which time it is important to remember McVay kicked Goff to the curb due to his high standards.

We can keep arguing and rehashing this shit, as well. Or we can just move forward and hope the kid's got the goods. He definitely has a chance to be a starter at this level. Where we differ is on the likelihood of that, and whether it's gonna be enough for McVay.
This is not a response to you so much but your post reminded me of a stat I heard.

One of the media evaluators, maybe Warner, looked at all of his pro-style snaps. Snead alluded to this too in number of snaps he turned his back on the defense. Simpson had more of those types of snaps than any other college QB.

It's still not a huge sample size but it does mean that every QB is a projection.

I fear that everyone on this board will be sorry they didn't take a dynamic weapon who would have helped them TODAY. Every time we see Sadiq or Lemon making plays next year will be painful while Simpson is holding a clipboard.

They were in position to get their future franchise qb (their thinking) and they couldn't resist. Maybe they pick someone in the 2nd round that can help them now.

If Ty Simpson had 37 SEC starts under his belt, I wouldn’t give a rats ass how tall he was. I’d say “sign me up!”. Baker Mayfield was a 3 year starter in college. He won the Heisman. He proved consistently he could play at a high level. Simpson hasn’t shown that. He played one season and was hurt for half of it. I think the size questions are fair, but the lack of reps bothers me significantly more.
And that’s why they could get him at 13
He plays 2 seasons he’s top 5

If you like the pick or not, you have to hand it to Snead. He knew he had the13th pick and back in december was asked by Simpson's father if he should come out. It sounds like he basically talked the kid into coming out instead of taking 6.5 mil in the portal so he could take him. New he wouldn't have a shot at him next year. One account said that Snead told Simpsons Dad he knew he was a first round pick because he would take him.

In this case, you might want him to have more starts, but if he is as good as they think, more starts would mean out of our range.

Snead is a MASTER. He probably could've gotten McDuffie for Pick 13, and not given up the 5, the 6, and next year's 3, along with the 29. But he knew he'd never get Simpson at 29. Master Class.

Yeah, certain people refuse to accept that drafts are about the long term, not short-term solutions to immediate needs. It's why the Rams went out of their way to fill as many needs as they could before the draft.

Disagree. Looked like a normal phone call to me. I've seen enough of the videos over the years.
After watching some interviews, I think youre right. I think they were on the same page. Just a weird spot or maybe he was doing it to reassure Stafford where they stand. Just never seen Sean act like that after a draft pick. Especially a high one.

Anyway, time to crush the rest of the draft.

I just don't see the need to rationalize that particular stat. There's a lot of shit that goes into projection of these QBs. It is an inexact science. So putting all of it together, vice disregarding certain aspects, is the best approach.

Anyway my worries with Simpson are mostly related to his ability to handle pressure, and whether he will be good enough for McVay. But at this point I'm tired of saying it. And I have every reason now to hope he pans out for us. So I'm gonna try to do that instead of knocking the kid.

Yes its over now. We are ALL rooting for him the same and will all be either heroes or victims based on his performance. In Les and Sean we trust.
