I’ll be really glad if I’m wrong, but I about fell in my chair this morning when I saw who we picked. I was hoping for an OL, and when I was scrolling down and saw that several were taken right before us, I was thinking that we traded down.
Nope. 6’1” qb for a team with a 1 or maybe 2 year window.
I’m hoping McVay was all in on this pic, but I’ve read a few things that he wasn’t. If he wasn’t then he’s got a perfect exit reason after this year.
Has everyone forgotten that our starting QB is a 38 year old with a long injury history? If Jimmy G is presumably retiring, and we have a need for a legitimate backup QB plus an heir apparent for Matthew, why would anyone object to the selection of Ty, especially given that he looked like the top rank QB until the injury bug surfaced?

Ty Simpson is the worst pick in my almost 30 years of being a Rams fan. Awful in every way. HUGE reach at 13.

Worse than Lawrence Phillips and Eddie Kennison over Eddie George and Marvin Harrison in round 1, 1996?

Worse than Jimmy Kennedy?

Worse than Jason Smith?

Worse than Adam Carriker?

Worse than Tye Hill?

Worse than Greg Robinson?

Worse than Alex Barron?

Worse than Trung Canidate?

Sheesh :eyeroll:

No, the fact is HE WILL have less wear and tear if he sits 2-3 years. That's a FACT. Could he still get injured, of course. But he can use that time to bulk up and its only gonna benefit him....
Its also a fact that you can not mentally and physically prepare for a real game unless you play in a real game. Is it not? He can be the healthiest hes ever been in his life when its his time on the field. But if he doesnt get real nfl reps, hes not going to be 100% ready.

Here’s what I like about this pick.

If the Rams just found their future franchise QB, none of this debate will matter in 2–3 years. That’s the reality. This feels very much like the Green Bay Packers philosophy, draft a high-ceiling quarterback, let him develop behind a proven veteran, and think long-term instead of chasing short-term validation. That’s exactly what Les Snead is doing here.

The potential transition from Matthew Stafford to Simpson could mirror what the Packers pulled off going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. That doesn’t mean it will happen but that’s the blueprint. Tyson has the tools, but like any prospect, the real question is whether he can put it all together at the NFL level. Did Snead reach? Maybe. But anyone claiming certainty right now is just guessing. Time will tell.

Another aspect I like: if Tyson doesn’t work out, the Rams are in a position to know early. Assuming Stafford stays healthy, Tyson won’t be forced onto the field before he’s ready. That gives the coaching staff time to evaluate him behind the scenes. Sean McVay saying Tyson will immediately compete with Bennett is actually a smart move. If Tyson can’t beat out Stetson, that’s a major red flag and the Rams can pivot quickly, limit the damage, and avoid being tied to him long-term by declining the fifth-year option.

And this is exactly why I trust Les Snead.

People are so quick to call something a “reach,” but look at what Snead has consistently done for this franchise.

He drafted Aaron Donald in the 1st round (13th overall)—arguably the greatest defensive player of his generation and one of the best to ever play the game. If you remember dropped to 13th because teams were convinced he was too small to be effective in the NFL. How did that work out?

He found Cooper Kupp in the 3rd round, a pick that turned into a Super Bowl MVP and one of the most productive receivers in football.

He landed Tyler Higbee in the 4th round, who became a long-term starter and one of the most reliable pieces of the offense.

Then look at what he’s done in the later rounds, where most teams are just hoping to find depth.

Kyren Williams — 5th round
Puka Nacua — 5th round
Byron Young — 3rd round
Kobie Turner — 3rd round
Steve Avila — 2nd round

That 2023 class alone helped accelerate one of the fastest rebuilds in the NFL. Puka Nacua was a 5th-round steal who immediately played like a star. Kobie Turner and Byron Young became instant contributors on defense, and Steve Avila solidified the offensive line. ()

Then in 2024, Snead kept stacking talent:

Jared Verse — 1st round
Braden Fiske — 2nd round
Blake Corum — 3rd round
Kamren Kinchens — 3rd round

This isn’t luck anymore. At some point, repeated success becomes a pattern.

Snead and Sean McVay have proven they can identify talent in every round, develop players quickly, and build around a long-term vision instead of reacting emotionally to public opinion.

So when people ask, “Did Snead reach?”

My answer is simple: this is the same GM who found stars in the 3rd, 5th, and even later rounds while rebuilding a playoff team after losing Aaron Donald.

He’s earned the benefit of the doubt.

The Rams don’t just draft for today. They draft for what this roster looks like two and three years from now—and more often than not, Les ends up being right.

The Rams clearly have a plan. And this pick fits that plan, whether people see it yet or not.
Out of a 1000 posts on this subject, this one is the true thread winner.

My only small quibble is that I'm not sure it's a major red flag if Simpson doesn't win the QB2 job. I expect him too, though.

I dont see any reason Simpson HAS TO win QB2 THIS year. Best case scenario is Jimmy G is back at 2, as long as Simpson is practicing, repping, and learning I'm fine with it.

This does not preclude him from winning or being QB2 this year, my point is, he doesn't HAVE to.

Schrager on the Rams' thinking. Note to those commenting about Snead's statement in the presser about Simpson falling, apparently (right or wrong) there was concern that the Cards might find a way to get him first.

As i said last night, about the folks who insisted Rams could have traded down and still gotten Simpson, Arizona was INTENT on coming out of this draft with Love AND Simpson, and would have "Jaxson Dart traded" for him ahead of us.

I am having a hard time with the whole - McVay has never met the kid thing.

That feels like super bizarre to me. Wouldn’t you want to look at film together, hit the white board, anything?

I was - and still am - deferential on the pick - I certainly understand taking a QB when you get the chance - but never talking to him first? That feels very odd to me.

Schraegs is plugged in with McVay. So there is no reason to doubt what he is saying. The Rams identified him as their dude and took him, it was a full front office buy-in. Whether any of us like it or not doesn't matter, he's in horns now.

So let's move on to adding some weapons for our QB1 and rounding out the rest of the roster starting tonight.

I think the Rams not spending #13 on Lemon shows just how committed they're going to be about 13 personnel next year (looking at you, Terrance Ferguson!).

The Rams zigged while the rest of the league zagged. That's worked out pretty well under Snead / McVay so far.

If McVay can be that forlorn on camera because he didnt get his draft crush, in a process where it takes two teams to tango, in which Snead has to be the ADULT in the room, then he's a fuckin crybaby. Like a kid who didnt get what he REALLY wanted for Christmas. Grow the fuck up man and show strength in public for your FAMILY. Glad Les ultimately calls these shots, and he'll be around longer than Sean anyway.
Your first time getting exposed to McVay? The guy wears his emotions on his sleeves. Hes an ultimate competitor. That's why mainstream media picked up on his press conference demeanor also... people SAW something had him slightly off kilter. His answered were short and he seemed annoyed it's not debatable.

Its also a fact that you can not mentally and physically prepare for a real game unless you play in a real game. Is it not? He can be the healthiest hes ever been in his life when its his time on the field. But if he doesnt get real nfl reps, hes not going to be 100% ready.
You can look at a glass half full or half empty. I like the half full take.

No way. This is wild. An undersized QB without great traits going this high doesn’t make much sense. This is such a far deviation from the current talent level and arm talent of the top quarterbacks in the league — including current Rams starter Matthew Stafford. Maybe sitting on the bench behind Stafford will unlock some latent talent in Simpson, but the back half of Simpson's season was legitimately not good. Even if he was injured, his size makes that a concern in the NFL, too.
The above is totally consistent with my point ... that you will find "some negative articles".

However, if you do a little Fair and Objective Research, you will also find that
"Most reports and comments suggest an above-average NFL arm."

By-the-way ... I absolutely hate the selection of Simpson ... I am just a little more objective than some.
