Yeah, funny, but as I recall that was after failing to move up for the guy he REALLY wanted.

See how it works? There's disappointment, and it shows in McVay's demeanor.
I'm sure McVay was bricked up on about maybe getting Tyson or Love. Its good restraint to not trade the farm to move up for those guys.

13.

Grade: F

No way. This is wild. An undersized QB without great traits going this high doesn’t make much sense. This is such a far deviation from the current talent level and arm talent of the top quarterbacks in the league — including current Rams starter Matthew Stafford. Maybe sitting on the bench behind Stafford will unlock some latent talent in Simpson, but the back half of Simpson's season was legitimately not good. Even if he was injured, his size makes that a concern in the NFL, too.
Completely unreliable and untrue when they do not include McDuffie when grading our 1st round. We had pick 29, we traded it for McDuffie. They'd rather shit on us however.

People saying McVays body language in the presser is nothing aren't very perceptive obviously. He was not his usual chipper self, he was short and seemed annoyed with some of the questions. Does this mean he doesn't like Simpson? No of course he signed off on the pick.

The nuance here is IMO we had a plan he preferred like going up to get Tate/Tyson but it didn't work out. We tried this the last two years with Bowers, Loveland, etc and it never materialized.

This is why McVay was ticked.. Simpson wasn't his initial choice for this year he was a fallback option at 13 if they stayed put. To me this best explains his demeanor. The phone call to Simpson by no means showed the typical McVay excitement either..its odd to me people are using this to show how much he wanted the pick.

Everyone needs to calm down. “Rams wasted this first round pick when they’re so close to a Super Bowl.”

Guess what. Rams have been to two superbowls, won one, and were one win away from getting a third WITH ONE FIRST ROUND PICK IN 9 YEARS.

The sky is not falling.
This can't be stated enough. It's almost like Rams fans have amnesia and forget this fact every single year.

This is what happened IMO and the most logical answer given recent history. McVays demeanor was obviously not his usual self

I'm like 80% sure that McVay watch highlights and film of Simpson during the college season and said to Snead that's my kind of guy. If we have a shot at him, he's the QB i'd like to ride with post Stafford.

Yet he never seemed this annoyed in any of the other drafts where he didnt get what he wanted? Not getting what you want is quite common unless youre the very first pick. So it doesnt really add up. If anything, look a little more chipper to put some confidence in your new player.

I highly doubt he had time to watch Simpson during the season

If McVay can be that forlorn on camera because he didnt get his draft crush, in a process where it takes two teams to tango, in which Snead has to be the ADULT in the room, then he's a fuckin crybaby. Like a kid who didnt get what he REALLY wanted for Christmas. Grow the fuck up man and show strength in public for your FAMILY. Glad Les ultimately calls these shots, and he'll be around longer than Sean anyway.

Haha, have you paid attention to this coach? McVay has on numerous occasions shown petulance. I appreciate him and his rah rah attitude but it masks an underdeveloped anxiety tolerance and it comes out as the tension you saw on tape last night.

I have many McVay criticisms. This can add to it.

Its been linked on this thread that he was similarly acting in the presser after getting Verse. Perhaps these guys have been up since 3am and its a long day. I'm not taking anything from it. I 100% guarantee McVay approved of this pick. Add in the fact that they just drafted the guy that will someday replace his good friend and team leader. If he came out super happy and excited, maybe that would sting Staffords feelings?

Exactly, and if this was a Quarterback we Drafted to play THIS Season, Sean would have been way more bubbly, "cant wait to get to work," etc.

Small potatoes. Something for the chicken-littles to hysteric over.

Here’s what I like about this pick.

If the Rams just found their future franchise QB, none of this debate will matter in 2–3 years. That’s the reality. This feels very much like the Green Bay Packers philosophy, draft a high-ceiling quarterback, let him develop behind a proven veteran, and think long-term instead of chasing short-term validation. That’s exactly what Les Snead is doing here.

The potential transition from Matthew Stafford to Simpson could mirror what the Packers pulled off going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. That doesn’t mean it will happen but that’s the blueprint. Tyson has the tools, but like any prospect, the real question is whether he can put it all together at the NFL level. Did Snead reach? Maybe. But anyone claiming certainty right now is just guessing. Time will tell.

Another aspect I like: if Tyson doesn’t work out, the Rams are in a position to know early. Assuming Stafford stays healthy, Tyson won’t be forced onto the field before he’s ready. That gives the coaching staff time to evaluate him behind the scenes. Sean McVay saying Tyson will immediately compete with Bennett is actually a smart move. If Tyson can’t beat out Stetson, that’s a major red flag and the Rams can pivot quickly, limit the damage, and avoid being tied to him long-term by declining the fifth-year option.

And this is exactly why I trust Les Snead.

People are so quick to call something a “reach,” but look at what Snead has consistently done for this franchise.

He drafted Aaron Donald in the 1st round (13th overall)—arguably the greatest defensive player of his generation and one of the best to ever play the game. If you remember dropped to 13th because teams were convinced he was too small to be effective in the NFL. How did that work out?

He found Cooper Kupp in the 3rd round, a pick that turned into a Super Bowl MVP and one of the most productive receivers in football.

He landed Tyler Higbee in the 4th round, who became a long-term starter and one of the most reliable pieces of the offense.

Then look at what he’s done in the later rounds, where most teams are just hoping to find depth.

Kyren Williams — 5th round
Puka Nacua — 5th round
Byron Young — 3rd round
Kobie Turner — 3rd round
Steve Avila — 2nd round

That 2023 class alone helped accelerate one of the fastest rebuilds in the NFL. Puka Nacua was a 5th-round steal who immediately played like a star. Kobie Turner and Byron Young became instant contributors on defense, and Steve Avila solidified the offensive line. ()

Then in 2024, Snead kept stacking talent:

Jared Verse — 1st round
Braden Fiske — 2nd round
Blake Corum — 3rd round
Kamren Kinchens — 3rd round

This isn’t luck anymore. At some point, repeated success becomes a pattern.

Snead and Sean McVay have proven they can identify talent in every round, develop players quickly, and build around a long-term vision instead of reacting emotionally to public opinion.

So when people ask, “Did Snead reach?”

My answer is simple: this is the same GM who found stars in the 3rd, 5th, and even later rounds while rebuilding a playoff team after losing Aaron Donald.

He’s earned the benefit of the doubt.

The Rams don’t just draft for today. They draft for what this roster looks like two and three years from now—and more often than not, Les ends up being right.

The Rams clearly have a plan. And this pick fits that plan, whether people see it yet or not.
