Worth also mentioning that Simpson wouldn't have only 15 starts if he'd transferred and taken the bag. He said he couldn't see himself playing for anyone other than Alabama.

I still value loyalty and values. Whether that means he can play the guitar is obviously totally unrelated, I just think we shouldn't hold that loyalty against him necessarily.

Full of mixed feelings about this pick.

On the downside, disappointed we won't get an impact, plug-and-play guy for the offense this year. Lemon or Cooper would have been decent picks there and both could have come in and been major contributors as a rookie. So that is definitely a downside. As good as our offense was last year, Cooper or Lemon could have made us un-fucking-stoppable.

I can't say I know enough about Simpson myself to have a strong opinion on whether this was a good pick or not, but I do give a lot of deference to McVay's ability to evaluate QBs. He saw something and he was willing to take a shot (and yes, this WAS a McVay pick ... no way Snead would have taken him without Sean's input).

For Simpson himself, it's hard to imagine him going into a better situation. He's coming to a team with a top 3 HC (maybe even best overall) and an offensive mastermind. He doesn't have to play this year, and he gets to sit and learn behind the league MVP and should-be HOFer. He will be given time to develop in an environment that well-suited for that, probably better than anywhere else he could have gone. If he does work out, this pick will look like genius in a few years.

Another thought, going back to WR ... McVay must see someone in the 2nd round or later that he thinks could be a steal, and given the record he has with Kupp and Puka, we know he can see things other coaches can't. Both of those cases yielded solid 1st round talent for a 3rd rounder in one case and a 5th rounder in the other. So maybe we can still get that plug-and-play guy.
Great, measured and fair post.

Lmaooo what?!?

Point them out then. List the number of QBs, 6’1 or shorter with fewer than 15 starts, that had a good NFL career. Hell, you can even get rid of the 6’1 requirement if you want. Just make a list of NFL QBs with 15 starts or less. I look forward to reading your list!!
I can name two NFL MVPs: Kurt Warner and Cam Newton.

Welcome Ty! Sit, learn and get BIGGER!

I hope this pick is more Kupp, Verse, Puka, Turner instead of TuTu, Stetson.

This will make TC and preseason games exciting.

Grade on this draft won’t be known for 2-4 years. Will be interesting to see who was right about Simpson and his translation to the NFL. Time will tell.

We just saved a crap load of cap space the next five years. We can now sign whoever we want to LT deals - the OL, Puka, Defense studs, etc. Maybe even spend in FA.

At least we don’t need to use next years first on a QB. We may get a stud with so many other teams needing QBs. Unless we trade it soon for a 2026 pick.

Yes and experience has become an even MORE important factor. That’s why guys like Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels are coming in and playing well right away, and guys like Trey Lance and Anthony Richardson will bounce around from team to team.
Sure, experience matters for guys who are coming in and playing RIGHT AWAY. Here's the good news, Simpson gets to sit behind the reigning NFL MVP. There's no pressure for him to play right away.

Like EVERYONE else in this thread - I don’t know. But I trust our front office to have made that call. They clearly think so. And if they think so, I think so.

But didn't these same people draft Stetson Bennett a few years ago (no, not in the 1st round)?
...how did that go so sideways?

Just saying.
There's nothing we can do about it.
I want to look forward to the rest of our draft.

One advantage to taking Simpson round one is the aforementioned 5 years of team control. If Stafford plays for let's say 2 of those years, when the kid takes over that's enough time to help compensate to clear Stafford's money off the books.

Either way at current QB value that 5th year option is extremely valuable for the QB position.

No, not in the first round.

And I’m not saying these guys can’t miss. They can.

But the darts they throw are shitloads more likely to hit bullseye than the darts you or I (or some draftnic on YouTube) might throw.

Yeah, in the 4th round
To be a potential back up to Stafford, and he's still on the roster
So?
