Tremendous point ... now let's get back to this Goff discussion. And, what about that Eric Dickerson trade!?!

Maybe I should start a thread about the Les Richter deal.
And while we're at it, the Bettis trade!!!!

Exactly how many HOFers have the Rams traded away?

There was no future for Goff and McVay after that playoff game.
Agree. McVay STARTED to be done with Goff Miami game, then was mostly done with Goff Home San Francisco game (Nick Mullens) then was FINALLY done with Goff NYJ (0-13) game.

Also I will add that the same posters who bought that bullshit storyline back in the moment it occurred (who overlooked that Goff was effectively benched in that playoff game) are probably the same posters who were so stunned and upset when the Rams traded him for Stafford.

And with that I'm gonna desist on this argument because it has already gone on too long. This will be my final salvo on the matter. For this thread. :laugh2:

I was on another board when this went down. Like Merlin, i couldn't believe the amount of posters upset at the Stafford trade.

I was ecstatic.

That home SF game was blown by McVay and his blinders-on playcalling. In a tie game, with the ball on our 25 and 3:11 left, he calls 5 straight pass plays and then punts. On his previous 6 carries, Akers had run for 61 yards, 6 yards, 1, 0, 4 and 6 yards. The Rams ate up a whopping 51 seconds before punting and that vaunted Brandon Staley defense allowed SF to drive 56 yards, including two 4th down conversions, for the GWFG.

The NY Jets game? IMHO, Goff was like the 4th worse part of the Rams that day, preceded by 1. the defense, 2. the special teams, 3. the OL.

On the Rams defense.....the 0-13 Jets had 3 long sustained drives.....
1st of game: 13 plays; 74 yards; TD eating 7:12
1st of 2nd half: 11 plays; 72 yards; TD eating 6:30
2nd of 2nd half: 10 plays; 72 yards; FG eating 4:30

Don't get me wrong, Goff wasn't good. But those other 3 phases of the team sucked worse.
And history shows, being done with Goff; trading him to Detroit for Stafford WAS THE ABSOLUTE CORRECT MOVE. Goff was never good under pressure and McVay needed somebody who was good. When your defense gives up long sustained drives to an 0 for 2020 team, when your special teams allowed blocked punts and blocked field goals, when your OC has brain farts, calling 5 straight pass plays with 3:11 left in a tie game, you need a QB who can dig you out of those type of holes. Stafford is the man!!!

I think McVay was done with Goff after the Miami game.....and that was partially McVay's fault for not adjusting to the way the Miami defense was playing. Bottom line is Goff wasn't good enough, period and McVay didn't want to wait around for him to get good (which I whole-heartedly agree with).

Okay, this is a little bit of a hill I'll die on here. This may well have been the case but there are times where McVay will send in multiple calls into the huddle and the QB chooses run/pass or modified pass play based on pre snap coverage. It would not shock me if one or two calls that came in during this series was like that and coverage determined that it would not be a run but one can equally make the distinction that McVay should just have sent in run calls that couldn't be changed.

Sometimes it seems like one can somehow appreciate the difficulty in learning the TE position as a rookie more than the even more difficult QB position.
1000%

I need to see a huge leap from Fergs as a pass catching weapon this year.

I need to see Simpson with a clipboard all year.

At the time…I was ecstatic Goff was gone. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure if Stafford was going to be a lateral move or an upgrade. It didn’t take long to get the answer.

The Miami game, and SPECIFICALLY the Van Ginkel strip-sack Fumble, is for me personally, "Ground Zero," on when I was done with Goff. Lets not also forget the horrible Interceptions he threw in December at Seattle (cost us the Division) and the horrendous one he threw against Jets.

Disagree. McVay would have moved heaven and earth at the time in my opinion to get a different Quarterback. If it wasnt Stafford he would of went hard after Aaron Rodgers, (quasi available) Deshaun Watson (very available), he was DONE with Goff after 2020.
This goes back to one of my NFL Draft mantras. Team needs don't influence player availability.

No one is going to be able to convince me that the Packers would have even considered trading Aaron Rodgers coming off of an MVP season to the Rams (a key rival) or any other competing NFC team. And Watson was in the middle of his legal mess and probably not a good fit for McVay.

I just can't get myself to believe that McVay / Snead would have moved on from Goff without a solid alternative. I would have consider it. But, I'm a fan. Not the head coach of a team that could compete for a title.

Yes, Rodgers had just won MVP, but was year-to-year with Green Bay and was dropping ambiguous hints about his future. This was his "the future is a beautiful mystery" phase, and yes, before Stafford shot out available Aaron Rodgers and Rams WAS heavily rumored.

There was no way, shape or form that Jared Goff was returning to Rams in 2021.

Ok. He may have been at that time. But I simply don't believe that McVay would have lacked the common sense to look at the possible alternatives THAT OFFSEASON and not re-evaluate that viewpoint. It was slim pickens sans Stafford.

No one is going to convince me that he would be able to walk into that locker room and look into Andrew Withworth, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp, and Jalen Ramsey's eyes and say we are rolling with let's say Blake Bortles and we are going compete for a titie.

Making a push and getting a deal done are two different things altogether.

It would make no sense for the Packers to deal Rodgers to the Rams so that he and the Rams could/would beat them.

Please jog my memory.

Maybe it's happened. I can recall non contender deals to contenders. But has a legit contender ever traded a top talent playing a key position to another legit contender in the same conference?

Well yes, but it turned into a complete disaster and would probably never happen again. The 49ers famously and foolishly traded in his prime great Charles Haley to the Rival Dallas Cowboys in order to have the Cowboys beat them regularly in championship games.

But the point with Rodgers is, he was at that rare point in his career where he could have dictated where he wanted to go. Don't forget, he had the Packers draft his replacement on him in 2020 which he was none too happy about. He also of course had the home in the Los Angeles area.

I mean, I generally agree but there has to be some room.

Look, is it likely I can land a rocketship in my backyard, no. But there's a .001% chance I can do it.

Anythings possible... except faster than light travel. Nope. Forget it.

Yes, I guess I have to say there was a chance. McVay was definitely going to exhaust all options though and I would say 97% one of those options would have came through, whether it was Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold who were all off their originally drafted teams and floating in the NFL Wasteland at the time.

He was DONE with Goff.

1. BAD Super Bowl 2018
2. Bad 2019, missed Playoffs
2. Bad 2020, blew Division. Got fed up, went to Wolford.

Can't we just all admit that he didn't like him and want him anymore.....???

Yeah that trade backfired big time which IMO would make another team making that same mistake even less likely.

I get where Rodgers was at that point. And he could have dictated where he wanted to go. But that's only IF the Packers really wanted to trade him. Apparently, they didn't as he played two more seasons in Green Bay ahead of his raw replacement who probably wasn't ready.

Has anyone really disputed whether or not McVay wanted to move on or not?

At least I'm taking about what may or may not have occurred due to lack of possible alternatives.

On one hand it appears that some believe the Rams can get whatever and whomever they want when they want it. And on the other hand some of us believe that not to be the case.

BTW, Cousins and Mayfield were still with their original teams entering the 2021 season. Darnold? Ugh... To go from Goff to a Darnold who looked like a bust after his first three seasons would have been an extremely hard sell for the locker room and fan base, IMO. And especially not for the poster that first brought up Goff in this thread while at the same time stating that McVay needed an elite QB.
