the team that receives a punt is considered the defense until the moment the ball is kicked. On these plays my kid usually does a push pull on the guy on the punting team that lines up in front of him. The kid falls and the ball is kicked and then Lincoln gets in front of him and blocks him as he’s trying to get up. He does it every game. Last week he got flagged for it and the other refs went over to the head ref and told him that it isn’t a penalty, you could hear the ref who through the flag yelling yes it is from the stands. The opponent got the ball back and a first down

So yes, high school refs especially can suck.

Here is another instance. Every time we have this particular referee crew work our games they throw an excessive amount of flags on our team, but barely any on the opposing team. We had 10 holding penalties in the first quarter of a game they called. Holding goes on in every play and it very rarely ever gets called. Aside from that game you are likely to see an average of one holding call a game.

In one playoff game our receiver caught the ball and fell onto his back while holding the ball in his hands. He was clearly down. A defender ran up to the kid and took the ball out of his hands and ran it for a TD. The same ref crew allowed it. Not so coincidentally 3 members of that crew, two are the Klein brothers, all went to Southern Columbia, who is our biggest competition each year and our team is one of the few who defeats them every few years.

As a high school and youth official that works umpire, yes that’s where we’re positioned . It’s not Sunday football, I’ll shed perspective.

Nobody has any idea what the player said to the official. And judging by the player’s body language, words were exchanged and it appeared they were aimed at pushing buttons. I have no idea the past history, prior conversations this game, etc.

Second, the umpire was out of position. Instincts tell you to drop back when you see pass pro, but that’s not correct. Umpires should climb the pocket. ROD, any guesses why? I’ll let you all figure this out.

Perhaps this could have been avoided. I can’t say for certain. Yes the ump spots the ball and enforces penalties. However, the most important role of the umpire is to be heard and talk to players who need to hear your voice. This is how you prevent penalties.

The player was following the play. Looked like an accident on multiple replays so ref was out of line. Yeah I don't think NFL refs would dare do that to a player. The bias stories of lower league refs are bizarre, I personally have never experienced refs vs players or even dads vs refs while growing up. But that's the life of a sports fan... I bring that up because I worked with 2 guys who never followed sports. They aren't even in the same world of misery and controversy in sports as many of us are. But they also don't feel the highs we do in sports. They have simply chosen not to participate.

Actually that was a typo/ word correction that I missed. There name is Klebon. I used to deal with Dan Klebon frequently because the kids that I mentored were under his charge also, as a career link case worker. Dan is the taller one at 6’-6”. He was a star athlete at Southern Columbia. He wasn’t shy when talking about his disdain for our schools football teams.

Yeah, that’s it. The Klebon brothers. Damn auto correct!

Like I said, it’s the short one that’s the real asshole. I think his name is Marty or Morty … maybe, its Mugsy.

Ironically when I was coaching at High School & JUCO i could deal with the officials because I could converse with them and usually get an explanation as to why the call was made. IMO, they have to endure quite a bit, but the NFL Referees drive me crazy for some odd reason.

At least NFL refs don’t have to issue an official apology when they fuck things up:

No, but they should take responsibility and man/woman the fuck up. I do at HS games when it rarely happens.

Most HS games are taped and posted to an app. If coaches question a play, they will be reviewed by official supervisors.

What difference does that make?

The loss sticks and no amount of memos, letters or acknowledgment of error changes the win loss tallies

There is no get right after the fact, which is why it's so critical to be correct the first time

Agree with your point, but do you want those officials that blow calls to continue to get big games? That’s the purpose. They also won’t get recommended to be promoted up to the next level.

If I had my way, the human refs would be secondary to a massive Hawkeye system that would use AI/wire framing along with ball sensors to make most calls and EVERY CALL would automatically reviewed in real time so elevating shitty refs to the next level is less of an issue
