Haven't seen this discussed. Glad you brought it up. After this season, Verse is eligible for an extension.

Given his age and productivity to date, I think he's projected to get $45-$50 mil per year. It's not inconceivable that a year or two from now, Verse cost more than Garrett does.
It could mean that we can keep Garret AND other talent on the Dline that's less expensive than Verse.

For tose thinking compensation was possibly too high remember that cap hit was a big part of this deal and must be considered.
Garett is almost 5 years older but it feels like more since he was drafted at 21 wdereas Verse was 23.

The Stafford trade taught me there is more to trades than age and upside. When you can go from very good to elite it has to be seriously considered

OTC shows different numbers for Garrett in yr 4 and beyond. Their's aren't as bad as Spotrac.

Also to me, Verse was starting to show bust potential. He was a horrific tackler, absolutely horrific. Never seen a guy miss so many sacks.
Honestly Verse's QB pressures were I believe top 7 last year. Verse is still extremely young and still has the potential to break out even more if he finishes those pressures. I wouldn't rule out this trade also working out for the Browns in the long run.

Terrible take on a great young player. He's the reason the Rams didn't have to give up multiple 1sts. Wish there was a way we could have kept him and gotten Garrett, but apparently not.

You know what I'm wondering at this point, what does Byron Young look like after learning from Garrett? I think there's a high probability Young has more sacks than Verse over the next 3-5 years.

This also doesn't account for the double teams Garrett commands. Identical to AD you cant single block him so he will be double teamed non stop. Who else benefits from the more 1v1s and spacing? Does Kobe have a career year? Fiske? The talent upgrade we just got at pass rush can't be understated IMO.
I think anyone on that line that remains after the trade benefits. Garrett is a beast.

wtf....feels too cute by half to bring back a guy that's been out of the league for 2 years, as great as he was and is.

Too cute my ass, if AD did decide to come back, he's one of the very few athletes that could come back after time off a la Michael Jordan because AD was just that good, still in great shape, and is laser focus dedicated when he puts his mind to it. Whether this comes to fruition is anyone's guess but I'd be stoked, as many others, if it did.

Yep. I think the Rams tried with young and 2 1sts but the Browns didn't want anything to do with that. It was Verse or no trade.

.

Garrett I think mostly had his hand in the ground and will now probably be rushing from an upright stance though there will be a mixture. I don't see him rushing upright as that big a deal. In either case, he won't be dropping back from OLB but Verse didn't do that much either from what I remember. Young is the OLB that will mix and match rush and drop back as it's been in the past.
yea I did a little digging__

"Myles Garrett has never played as a 3‑4 outside linebacker in the NFL.

Throughout his career with the Cleveland Browns and now the Los Angeles Rams, Garrett has been listed and played exclusively as a defensive end (DE). His NFL profile and game logs show he has never been assigned to the 3‑4 OLB position Wikipedia+1.

In the 3‑4 scheme, the outside linebackers are typically smaller, more versatile players who can drop into coverage or rush the passer, while the defensive ends are larger, more pass‑rushing specialists. Garrett’s size (6'4", 272 lbs) and pass‑rushing dominance fit the DE role, not the OLB role in a 3‑4 defense.

Even in the Browns’ 4‑3 system, he has been deployed as a DE, not an OLB. His sack totals and pass‑rushing stats are consistent with that position, and there is no record of him playing OLB in any NFL game."

Maybe Fritz Shurmur has been Visiting Chris Shulas dreams and divised some sort of
Eagle Defense part 2. reversed. :) I think the Eagle was a 2-5 base.

This was a mid 1980's brilliant defense and maybe the birth of the zone blitz.
Fritz was forced to create the Eagle Defense because the team was so depleted of dlineman.
It made Kevin Greene a household name.

Not sure of the plan but I know there is one.
