There is a modicum of truth to this. McVay could easily quash it be he hasn't. This is why I've been saying that keeping Mayfield would go a long way in keeping McVay. He knows Stafford's days are numbered. There is no way I expect Stafford to play out his contract. Snead needs to be proactive and commit to Mayfield to be the starter in 2024. Tell Baker that and he will stay on a backup QB basis and backup contract. Give Sean a shiny new toy to continue to mold into his QB. If Mayfield walks I think Sean will stay only as long as Stafford is here and playing well. IMO that translates into year to year.

This is why I keep saying that I think Snead and McVay will tell Stafford he has one more year to get that second ring. It's not even certain that Donald will ever play another down for the Rams. If he does, IMO it's clear that this year would be his last. His dead cap is $19M next year. Stafford's dead cap in 2024 is $36M. That's $55M to spread over 2 years. That will be like when they carried both Goff and Gurley. It would be tough but it could be done.

Keep Mayfield and the Rams keep McVay. That's what I think it will come down to. With Matt's injury history the odds are very good that the Rams would be LUCKY if they get two more years out of Stafford. That's why IMO they really are only cutting short Stafford's time here by only a year.

I totally disagree.

McVay will stay or go based on stress tolerance.

If he's up for the challenge and can tolerate the stress in his drive to pursue a second ring, he'll stay.

But if he's feeling burnt out and the stress outweighs his ambition, he'll leave.

There are plenty of pieces in place for another run in 2023. Sean just has to decide if he wants it enough. Mayfield has nothing to do with his decision. IMHO.

Why is no one talking about Greg Olson? IMO He was signed as a potential successor to McVay if he decides to up and leave. He's been learning McVay's offense since he got here in January of last year. Of all the people to join the organization, the Rams bring back Greg Olson to be an offensive assistant to the boy genius. IMO he was brought in to learn McVay's style of running the team, and to understand the culture here.

If McVay leaves, which I doubt then I think Snead will go through the motions (Rooney Rule) but Greg will be the next HC. They could do worse. I have always believed that McVay's longevity was tied to Stafford. But since the signing of Mayfield and the quality of his play, I now see his tenure as the Ram's HC tied to Baker. Mayfield was Sean's signing, i.e. his choice. If Mayfield wants to stay, then I think this is Stafford's last year. This will give Baker a year to fully grow into Sean's offense. With the weapons he has on offense, Baker could be the final piece if Stafford leaves. The offense will change from Stafford's read and anticipate style to Baker's pure progression style. McVay's offense is a pure progression-style offense. If the deep shot looks to be there early then take it. As it was with Goff, the offense is read deep to short. The first read is always deep. That's why in 2019 when they dismantled Goff's OL and he didn't have time for that deep first read things fell apart.

Baker is the perfect fit for McVay's original style of offense, as it was in 2018. But like Goff, Mayfield needs good OL play to make those reads. Mayfield has shown me he's grown in that aspect of his game. In Cleveland, he was a 2 read QB just like Kyler. But unlike Kyler, Mayfield has grown professionally. Give him a good OL and decent receivers and he can win.

Sign Mayfield with a promise to start in 2024 and he will stay in LA. The same can be said for McVay. He will stay as long as Baker stays.

Madden was a great. The greats have a distinct personality all their own that is likable. This is why McVay will get big offers the rest of his career for analyst work. He will kill it when he finally switches over. He's personable, quick witted, well connected and up to date tactically on the game.

It will be interesting to see someday. I love McVay as a coach. But I honestly don't think I'll like listening to him in a booth. We'll see but that scratchy voice really doesn't strike me as a good color voice.

I am with you @RamFan503. Just because he’s an elite coach doesn’t make him great for TV. McVay’s a smooth talker, but he sounds canned to me in the way Collinsworth sounds.

As opposed to Romo who sounds genuine, with original thoughts as he goes.

But… We’ve never heard McVay as an analyst. So… what do I know?

Peter King seems to think McVay will still be coaching in 2023.

6. I think anyone who is really paying attention has to have some uncertainty about whether Sean McVay returns to coach the Rams in 2023.

7. I think one of the issues—and this is just me making an educated guess—is whether there’s a network out there that would come at McVay with the fervor that TV came after him 10 months ago. I thought McVay was taking a TV job after the Super Bowl, and maybe without the “run it back” emotion of the time he would have done that. Who knows? But since he chose to stay in coaching, FOX (Tom Brady), NBC (Cris Collinsworth), ESPN (Troy Aikman) and Amazon Prime Video (Kirk Herbstreit) all agreed to deals with analysts for huge money, and Tony Romo’s CBS contract reportedly keeps him employed there through 2030. It’s tempting to wonder, “What about a three-man booth at Amazon? Al Michaels and McVay are fairly close.” But I can’t see that working. Then you wonder about a studio show. I’m sure every show would love to put McVay in the middle of the pre- and post-game lineup, but two issues there. Most of these shows are East Coast-centered, and McVay and his bride live in L.A.—so if they stayed, that’s a weekly 2.5-to-three-day commitment at ESPN, CBS or NBC. And the money in the studio is maybe a quarter or a third of the number-one analyst role. I’d put my money on McVay being back to coach the Rams out of the mire, but we’ll see.

If McVay decides to go the TV route, he's going to ABC.

Can you imagine him hosting The Bachelor or; even better, The Bachelorette!?! Think about it.

It's the 4th episode, and the Bachelorette has to cut some suitors. She's undecided, and McVay steps-in ...

It's your decision but I put these guys through Gassers yesterday, and none of them make the Practice Squad. These guys would never survive Two-a-Days (the Double Entendre alone is TV-ratings Gold).
I got a nice former-back-up-QB named John I would like you to meet. Has a noodle-arm but he's a great guy.'

I imagine McVay would just spew Xs and Os about what he sees (and would be very interesting), with one of his occasional corny zingers.

No idea what's happening with McVay, but (unfortunately) Schefter is a respectable journalist. That doesn't mean his sources are correct.

I personally doubt that McVay will leave after a losing season like this one. However would not be surprised if McVay wanted some time to think about his future. He's poured a massive amount of energy into the Rams the last few years. Hard to maintain that pace year after year.
Part of that is because he has a lot of energy--it's just part of his personality. Add that to his age, and I think a great vacation will have him right back at it. In my mind, the only thing that might influence him otherwise is his wife.

I think that longevity is so important, look at coach Tomlin. he is an example of what I expected from McVay. Didn't know he had quit in him. it's a tough league and if McVay can't handle the stress then better he gets out now so we can try and recover in the next 3 yrs. compare Stafford and Mayfield. they are not even close in ability. Stafford has Bonafide's so it's hard for me to imagine that Mayfield makes coach stay. Hes a project and rams are designed to hire top qbs to succeed. so, we only go as far if our qb is elite. sad that there is no fight left in McVay but that's what I'm getting from him. go rams.

Adam Schefter claims McVay is in limbo. Still hasn't decided if he's coming back. Will take time after the final game to decide.

Sure seemed like McVay clarified he's coming back. Is Schefter doing the sensationalism thing?

McVay needs to squash this crap hard. It is not good for the team to have this chatter out there.

I agree with the author of that last article he could be doing more to shut this crap up.

For all we know, he has addressed the team. Outside noise can’t always be controlled.

It's about preparation and give-a-fuck to some extent I think. Collinsworth's shtick is to oversell whoever makes a play. It's a lazy approach to providing analysis to the fans on a telecast. And when that play maker is a favorite then he goes on with the verbal fellatio he's so astute at providing.

It's projection here of course but I expect McVay will prepare his ass off when he finally converts over. He'll watch film of the team, he'll know details about the players that add to the quality of the telecast. Plus he can comment on the whole thing. Coverages, coaches, QB reads, the whole nine.

There are 2 certainties regarding 2023
1. McVay, Head Coach- will be with the Rams
2. Baker Mayfield, QB- will not

That would be my fear, Morris gets promoted to Head Coach, Liam Coen stays on to be OC calling plays and Eric Henderson gets promoted to DC. I see 9-8 looming on the horizon ending up like the Buccaneers & Saints under Bowles & Allen.

In my vocation, I have seen employees take off long term (1 yr or more) to recover from emotional and mental health stress & return to continue their careers. It was not unusual for me to witness this. Many of these people were very smart & outstanding in their devotion to their vocation.

We have seen it (in shorter terms) in the NFL in the past due to medical health issues. Vocational burnout is real stuff.

I do not look at this as a weakness of the person in any way its life in general. Some people just burn brighter than others & McVay sure has burned ultra-bright in the NFL now for close to a decade. He has demanded himself to carry a massive load in his position due to the type of person he is.

If I were in charge of this Org & IF the reports are correct???. I would be offering McVay some good options to consider with this Ram Org. even like what we saw with Tampa Bay & their ex-coach this season-type stuff in order to retain McVay for when he is ready to return to his HC duties.

Best idea is just hide under the pillow after The Rams win tonight against Hags to keep them out of the playoffs.
Wake up after the 9ers win the superbowl & just remember it can get worse than that, but The Rams franchise no matter what will be better for what happened this season for seasons to come.
Don’t see Mcvay leaving,he has to much character.I remember him answer that question & this freaking Rams father was horrible with his son.Anyway that moment wasn’t totally lost with coming away with sending him love & cheer. Knowing he has work still to do.
—What makes Sean Mcvay great is his will to succeed & doing things the right way & what his core values & believes are.
Sean Mcvay is not one to walk away from a challenge or people he put his trust in.

If all those coaches comeback there is a reason they will do it.
If you think Morris is going to let things just ride its self out your CRAZY thinking. He won’t spoil his chance.

Sean Mcvay is already looking to replace coaches & Morris might already be on his way out. Mcvay is already prepared to roll up his sleeves & get dirty. How dare any Rams Fans want to DOUBT him after won superbowl victory & another one lossing it.He has brought in HOF players & has a huge coaching tree out there of winners He is like a poker player & going all in until he knows that what he believed in was TRUE!!

Sorry I get kissed at crap like this, even just joking.I take it too serious. But I know real Ram Fans that enjoy complaining more than winning teams even if it was a 9-8 season.
This season I didn’t even know how bad The Rams record was. Just took all the bombs across the beam & enjoyed what happened. Without a player like Baker Mayfield coming aboard would have hurt real bad,but that is who Sean Mcvay is.
— what else do people want. A stud QB helping The Rams across the finish line & The Rams a 3rd rd comp pick?
