Brees on Stafford

On the herd today, Cowherd plays a piece from Brees talking about Stafford. Brees says (paraphrase) "he's reached the point where he's seen it all and he still has all of his physical tools"

Cowherd on his show today said, "Stafford has mastered the position. He stays in the pocket longer than any old QB in recent memory. I don't know if it's intellect or mastery but Stafford's been in this kitchen so long, he knows where everything is at" :laugh4:

But how lucky are we as Ram fans? We thought we had "the guy" when we drafted Goff and McVay had him playing really well. But it just wasn't enough, so he goes out and gets Stafford. Is it possible we're under rating McVay? Possibly. Makes me wonder what he's going to get out of Simpson? No hurry mind you.

Indeed. Simpson *seems* like a different type of QB than Matt... but, he's got a lot upstairs & good physical tools to go with it. Just needs a little "seasoning" and next year, he's QB2. I think he's the kind of QB that Sean can work with.

Brees' exact quote was, "when you can match up the physical abilities you still have with this knowledge, experience, wisdom that's when you're riding at this level that's elite. That's where Stafford is. I told Matthew Stafford directly, you could have 3 or 4 of the best years of your career....coming up."

I heard Stafford relay Brees telling him that but coming from Brees, with his arm gestures and his raised eyebrows and a look that said to me, 'this guy is THE elite QB in the NFL right now', gets me excited about the season. Whew, lets get going!!!!

More comments from Brees...."that's when the veteran guys have the experience over the young gun slingers, right? The young guys are invinceable as far as their athleticism and what they can put their bodies through, they just don't have the.......(I thought he was going to say brains).....experience yet."

Brady didn't have elite arm strength. What he had was elite processing during a play. And his arm strength didn't deteriorate in his late 30's like Manning did. Stafford has elite processing and still has elite arm strength in his late 30's. I don't know if he wants to, but I'll bet he can still be a top tier quarterback for the next 3 or 4 years.

That kind of arm strength isn't taught. Either you have it or you don't. Nolan Ryan said he was just blessed with superior arm strength to throw a ball consistently in the 100 mph range. He didn't do anything different from any other pitcher. He was still throwing in the upper 90's at 46 years old. I think Stafford might be one of those guys who can maintain top tier arm strength into his 40's.

Peyton had that neck injury that depleted his arm strength.

Arm Strength isn't something that usually goes down often.
It's the legs and back and knees and other stuff that make them retire.

Arm strength not only goes down but it often falls off a cliff for a lot of QBs. Distance might stay static longer but velocity takes a big hit.

All the other stuff you mentioned has an effect too.

I have seen many retired NFL QBs on different shows, Joe vs Pro, and other shows and they say their arm strength is fine.

I could be wrong though. Seems most of the internet says they decline with age.

Manning was playing the best football of his career in Denver before his neck injury IMO. Had that never happened, I fully believe he would’ve played at a very high level until he was 41 or 42. He just couldn’t get anything on the ball anymore.

I think Stafford will play as long as he stays healthy and as long as the Rams can make deep playoff runs. You can tell he has a real genuine love for the game and the lockerroom setting. The only way the “ride off into the sunset” scenario happens after a Super Bowl win is if he gets beat to hell during the season and barely makes it across the finish line.

Peyton Manning, in 2015, ABSOLUTELY, "fell off a cliff."
