Akers had 22 carries for 29 yards. They had no option but to switch to Williams. Not sure why Akers has been so inconsistent but he has been given every opportunity to succeed.
I wouldn't be so quick to draw too many lessons from Akers' outing. For a few reasons.
First, when the seam was there he did his job. Problem is seams weren't really there. His best run was the bounce outside the tackle early in the game.
Second, the Seahawks were keying their asses off on Akers in their run fits. They knew the Rams wanted to run the ball due to lack of Kupp and were prepared for it.
And third we will need him going forward. He offers a different run style to Williams, and one which should be valuable vs stronger fronts like the one we're gonna see this next weekend.
All that aside I want to give full cred to Williams. You could see how fast he was hitting that hole early in the game. His energy was undeniable. Also he was a shoestring tackle away from a long TD run in the second half of the game. He would have been gone for sure.
Lastly looking ahead to SF they're going to need to be ready to play the run. Which has always been an advantage to them in our matchups, in that they typically stuff our run game and then McVay forgets about the run and they pin their ears back while they run the ball on us. Well looking at that week one win vs Seattle McVay called 40 run plays. Now that was largely enabled by sustained drives due to Stafford's performance, which will be tougher to pull off vs SF's rush. But the fact that McVay called that many runs will make SF prepare for our run game. If we can make those fucks play the run vice pinning their ears back in the first quarter that would be a real nice advantage vs normal against them.
