There's nothing worse actually than the double stench.Fixed
Not to be a wise guy ... but ... Who?I am about as ambivalent about this as is possible tbh. Decent backup but I think there are better out there.
I see it the same. Also if we lose Stafford for any length of time, then a rookie losing games is fine by me, because it will put us higher in a very good QB draft.I may be in the minority, but I'd be fine with a rook like Simpson/Nuss backing up this year. We will save a good amount of $ that can be used elsewhere.
Cooper Rush? Not to be a wise guy ... but ... Who?
As far as I have seen, the best of the remaining free agent quarterbacks are Tyrod Taylor and Cooper Rush; and I would prefer Garoppolo to either of them.
THAT was kind of my point in asking the poster who said there were 'better back-ups out there'.Cooper Rush?
Hell, we might as well re-sign Brett Rypien.
Rather have a rookie then either. Rypien should not be drawing checks from a NFL team.Cooper Rush?

May not, but any available vet may not either. I'd rather see a rookie out there then a terrible vet.The point of a vet QB2 isn't to insure against losing Stafford for a lot of time or the playoffs. It's to guard against losing #9 for 5-6 games, while keeping the playoff hopes and positioning alive.
A rook may not be able to do that.
I wouldn't consider Jimmy G a terrible vet. I think he'd be able to keep the team afloat for a short period of time.May not, but any available vet may not either. I'd rather see a rookie out there then a terrible vet.
Don't you believe in feel good stories, man?
John Cappelletti?
Brian's Song?
Wounded Rocky Bleier?
Kurt Warner!?!?
Maybe the next feel good story will be Garoppolo!!!
They might even do a movie staring Tom Brady as Jimmy g and Sydney Sweeney as the pornstar he got with.
There’s options.Rather have a rookie then either. Rypien should not be drawing checks from a NFL team.

Great assessment. This is very true - I have always had a hard time getting past it.
But I'm also just not a believer in the talent level, to be honest. He was the real weakness in that loaded San Fran team, was he not?
He may be able to keep us in a game or two - but if Stafford was not there for the playoffs, he doesn't feel like the guy who would be able to take us the distance, does he? Most backups aren't - I know.
It could also be that he doesn’t want to go through that rigamorale UNLESS he’s gonna start. Apparently, no teams are seeing him that way right now.Odd that we didn't get leaks of G's thoughts of retirement during the Cardinals rumors - not saying he's not actually thinking of retirement now. . . .
Regardless, safe to presume that, as a vet, G has little/no interest in any offseason conditioning/OTA/camp activities, by any team.
Great assessment.
I don’t think most people look at it that way though—he was the weak link. They see the 8-0 record and the SB appearance. If the 9ers felt he was good enough, then why the ridiculous draft capital spent to move up for a QB and then basically hand the job to to him. Had Jimmy not taken a pay cut the Rams would never have had their opportunity for revenge in the playoffs.
Folks need to let that part sink in:
The 9ers wanted to dump Jimmy g for an unproven trey lance, despite the 9ers making it to the SB with jimmy g.
Free agency isnt the only way to get a backup QB. We dont know who "could" be available in a trade, or who will be cut. Guys like Aiden O'Connell from the Raiders, Spencer Rattler Saints, Davis Mills could be available due to crowded QB rooms. Not advocating for any of them necessarily, just saying that FA isnt the only wayNot to be a wise guy ... but ... Who?
