I was driving through Atlanta today and caught the chatter of Jamie Dukes saying the Long sighting makes the Falcons contenders. The fans calling in had drank the cool aid too. I so wanted to call in and rain on their parade.

Jamie Dukes..LOL...One of the cliche machines among the talking heads...When, after one week, Houston is going with Mallett at QB, they're going to need a boatload more than Jake Long's knees to make them contenders IMO....

I may be wrong, but I don't imagine a street free agent signed in mid-September has ever been the reason a team ended up winning the Super Bowl.
Damn, if only the other 31 teams new there was a player of such magnitude still on the open market after the season has already started.

I was shocked to see Mike Person as the Falcon's starting center when I watched the game Monday. No surprise that they need more warm bodies for depth.
It's not a bad signing, but it doesn't add any wins to that team. SB contenders because you signed Jake Long coming off of what, 3 or 4 season ending injuries? He can be a nice piece if healthy, but at this point he's depth.

With Jake Mathews achoring the left side, Jake Long makes a great addition on the right side.
They just traded for Andy Levitre at guard only 10 days ago. Adding Levitre then Long sure goes a long way to shore up a weakness on the team.
Mike Person got abused alittle bit but otherwize they fared well against Philladelphia.
If you ask me, this is a good move and they probably didnt break the bank.
I'm not saying superbowl, but hell yes they are contenders.
Plus plus......you now have Long as the backup Left Tackle, with Tyler Columbo a percieved backup at RT. My opinion is that this is a good move for Atlanta, no doubt

I think he graded out pretty well when he played for us, but I'm just going on memory and not fact

Oh, I think it could be a decent move for the Falcons but does it make them a contender? No, if they are a contender, they are already that and not made it by the acquisition of Long. But to hear these Falcons fans today, they were just made one of the favorites.
yup they are giddy around these parts after beating Philadelphia on a Monday Night Stage. I think they are mostly giddy about thier defense flying to the ball to make up for a lack of pass rush. So any additional good news is only going to be magnified.
I thought they were going to have serious issues on BOTH front lines and figured Philadelphia would woop thier asses, but thats why they play the games.
They are counting on Vic Beasely waaaay too much and dont realize it takes more than one year to rebuild a defensive line.
