But without looking at the stats, my sense is that the defense didn't make big-time plays down the stretch of the season. It felt like the pass rush dropped off significantly from the first half of the season. This was my perception before McVay mentioned lacking closers. Once he and Snead mentioned that, I agree that that was the biggest issue at the end of the season.

As far as covering JSN, the pass rush affects the coverage. Having a closer will help keep him in check.
A couple of things.

The Rams played 20 games last year.
In the first 10 they had 27 sacks and 39 TFL
In the last 10 they had 25 sacks and 42 TFL

They played Seattle 3 times and went 1-2.
In the 2 losses they had 7 sacks, 11 TFL
In the 1 win they had 0 sacks, 0 TFL

Certainly pass rush doesn't mean sacks though many fans equate it that way. In the first Seattle game they hounded and confused Darnold into 4 picks.

One question though. Did McVay actually say, the reason we lost last year was because we didn't have a closer. Lost what? 6 times or lost the CCG?

I'll stick to my opinion a "closer" or lack thereof was only 1 of a possible half dozen reasons we lost games.

The only thing anyone needs to ask themselves is this:

Would you, or would you not, trade:

Jared Verse
2027 1st
2028 2nd
2029 3rd

for

Myles Garrett

I, along with Les Snead and Sean McVay, vote Yes.

Place your votes. These stats and circumstances mentioned above are kind of irrelevant to the situation, IMO.

Both he and Snead said that they felt a closer was the biggest thing they felt the defense lacked. I don't know that they explicitly tied it to a specific loss, but the mindset does explain the rationale for upgrading from Verse to Garrett.

It also explains why they traded for McDuffie.

Absolutely. As I've said multiple times. But the post you quoted is not a complaint of the trade but a response to an opinion of what McVay allegedly said or more importantly, meant.

Yes I would make that trade a hundred times over.
I have an opinion that most will disagree and that's you guys right, and I respect it .

I don't think the Rams were as reluctant to trade Verse as the P.R. have spun it.
Last season McVay after game 2 had to pull Verse into his office and talk about what
McVay thought to be Verse not playing with the same effort as he did his rookie year.
Verse did seem to step it up after the talk.
If you notice in the past, there have been quick exits of players that were surprising. I.E.
Ernest Jones. It seems that as soon as a player falls out of McVay's idea of the Ram umbrella
said player is gone. Having to be pulled aside for lack of effort and the not so smart remarks to the press
is more than enough to be politely(positive PR spin) and quietly shown the door.
And again JMHO.

Now it just seems like he would be jumping on the bandwagon. And if he gets a 20M deal for a year, he will cost us good young player for the next 4 years.
Aaron freaking Donald can do WHATEVER he wants to do.
If he wants to come back and play, then he will come back and
play. I don't care about the money or If he wants to stomp on a bandwagon
He has more than deserved the right to do whatever the hell he wants to do.

Great point, Coach. I had forgotten about that talking to Verse was given, also didn't like his offseason comments and his podcasting trending. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those tears Snead and McVay were crying about losing Verse were somewhat Croc-o-diley.

"some of those tears Snead and McVay were crying about losing Verse were somewhat Croc-o-diley." :ROFLMAO:

Well I look back at myself at his age and my light bulb was burning lower than Verse's his ever will.
That being said , instead of jokingly challenging AD to a workout, the smart move would have been to
challenge AD in the knife workout.
And then when he got there ,walk up to AD and say

" Sinsei, please teach me the ways of the "QB Hunter". lol.
But seriously instead of lifting weights until you puke, spend the day learning handwork, footwork, from a HOF great
pick AD's brain until he makes you go home.

My guess, they saw multiple times on tape throughout the season where a sack should have been had and simply decided the upgrade for an elite right now pass rusher like Garrett would make one hell of a difference. The Rams clearly want to win now and Garrett is still in his prime. Verse is also awesome and is on par pressure wise with Garrett just not near him as a pass rusher. Could that change down the line for Verse? Of course it can but he's got work to do whereas Garret has and already is there.

YEAH SURE — a little FAR FETCHED,but will agree to some of it. The REST is some bs.

Mcvay just addressed AD99 & he seems GERKED UP ! Love the way he addressed it early.

What I think about AD99 is somewhat just imo, then there is the reality. Labron James & what he just did SHOWS you what A G.O.A.T. Is all about. You look back at AD99 History & I saw him like try to help Greg Robinson out & sort of LOL at the young fella in his FACE.Like you don’t know what work ethic is.This point is just AD-LIBBING,but they were both interviewed when in St.Louis.

What I’m saying is AD99 gets to try to write his OWN story & what he wants out of his Legacy like I posted. The money will be for more than 2 years $8 million?? That’s what James just did,SO is about the money ???

Garrett & AD99 both have around the same SACKS.There’s no Doubt AD99 doesn’t LOOK UP at Myles Garrett.Trent McDuffie is in AHH of him.

I find it disappointing to think Jared Verse to be the real goat of this though. He helped bring Myles to LA. WHAT I SAY - don’t get it twisted !!! The Draft picks The WAY your talking should have been 3 1st RD picks rather than 1 1st plus.

Don’t forget MATTHEW STAFFORD though when your looking back ?
He wasn’t CHEAP!!!

Cooks ?? Watson ??? Peterson ????

Les Snead has done an EXCELLENT JOB getting value.

Go back to Joyner & Littleton ??He got Draft Picks for them?? Joyner cost a Franchise year though. Both Raiders (lol).

Quinn ?? Robert still had Game, but didn’t fit. Then being able to Trade Q to the Giants after he signed a big contract.

I had A POST taken down TRADE TODD GURLEY!!! The RAMS got JACK for him & it wasn’t YOUNGBLOOD either.

I could add or trace & do homework, but I’ll keep it RAW like my meat. Not like Eddie Murray & DEFEAT !! As reported by the NY POST of tmz allegedly??? AD99 is pure DAWG !!

Yeah you're right, I don't agree at all with this take. Garrett is the top defensive pass rusher/player in the NFL. Rams wanted him really bad and the Browns wanted Verse in exchange. Highly doubt Verse's effort lead to this happening. If the Browns were not willing to trade Garrett, Verse would still be a Ram.

Yes, don't believe effort had anything to do with it. It was said, they were trying to complete the trade with picks only and then finally agreed to giving up Verse.

Verse is also awesome and is on par pressure wise with Garrett just not near him as a pass rusher.
Something was off with Verse. Something about angles, hands, flexibility, lateral movement, balance—I can’t put my finger on it—that affected his ability to latch onto a QB. I always hoped he would progress and develop out of it.
