Yep. Thomas sounds like Payton. This comes from Payton’s “whiny-victim” style leadership.

On game day, this translates itself as easy to “get inside their head”.

We saw it in the NFC Championship. Saints lost their composure down the stretch and gave away their chance to win.
  1. Payton was pacing the sideline bitching at the refs the entire end of that game. No way was he clear headed managing down the stretch.
  2. That clip of Thomas bitching to the refs before the interception.
They flat lost their composure. That’s a team you can get inside their head.

I think McVay's goes something like this: You respect me as a coach, person, and leader, and my rep, and that translates to setting a level of unspoken expectation of you (the refs) being competent and fair, sort of the way players are expected to play a great game instead of talk one. (Not saying that will be ultimately affective, or that he doesn't need to develop something tho.) He probably believes in developing congenial relationships over time, too.

In my years of experience “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”.

I don’t think that is how it should be but it’s human nature to be irritated by the bigger annoyance and to get rid of it quickly.
