When people criticize a qb I am always mindful of Payton Manning's comment that, behind every interception, there's a backstory about what actually happened that no one ever hears about.
You're right, the rbs were no-shows in the passing game. For that matter, the running game wasn't very good either. The o-line overall wasn't good enough. Cooks didn't do much and I have my doubts about Reynolds as a reliable route runner and pass catcher. The offense relied too much on predictable passing schemes. Even so, Goff threw for 4700 yards, but with too many breakdowns, turnovers, and mistakes.
Things will hopefully be different this year. Better coaching by O'Connell and better schemes will help. Better footwork by Goff will be important. Better blocking will help a lot. Adding Jefferson to the lineup with Kupp and Woods gives us another gifted receiver who can run precise routes and be where he is supposed to be. Akers can catch out of the backfield. These factors should enable Goff to throw more quickly and with anticipation, which he excels at.
I expect a big year from Goff and the passing game.

What will defeat the Rams both in passing and in running is poor play with the interior o-line. LG Noteboom is looking good and we know Corbett isn't elite but is above average. The weak link is Blythe and that is where IMO the defense will focus. The other issue is with RT. The second scrimmage showed Havenstein is below average in pass coverage. Floyd's speed was abusing him repeatedly and would have then resulted in pressures and sacks. In other words, the two weak links last year are still weak links this year. It's proving what I've been saying about Kromer.
It was clear last year that Havenstein's slow feet are a liability at RT. He is consistently beat in pass coverage by rushers with speed and power. It has also been clear since last year the Blythe is a blocking liability both in the run and pass game. If the o-line plays badly it's at Kromer's feet. To continue to recycle failed vets rather than develop the younger more talented players is simply mind-boggling. This second scrimmage proved beyond doubt that Havenstein is a poor starter. practices have also shown that Blythe also continues to struggle.
If the o-line struggles its all on Kromer, no more excuses.

As the practice was going, JB Long Tweeted that pressure came from the left (thinking Whit’s side)... but someone asked Long to clarify and he did...
He replied it came from the right side (so... yes... you are correct... Hav’s side)... but he also implied issue with TE assignments, if I read that series of Tweets right.

1. Not every QB is bad under pressure. c.f. Wussel, Mahomes. Jared working on escapability and making off schedule plays will help his OL. No OL can hold off a D line indefinitely, so this will help at least keep drives alive.
2. RH got a big contract masking his slow feet by using legal choke holds. Clooney was right to complain, and as soon a the refs started flagging this last season, his struggles with speed was exposed. I hope he's worked hard on this.

And to my eyes, neither was executing vs a zero blitz even when everyone in the stadium knew it was coming. I know that Goff hasn't been great vs the blitz but i can't put all of that on him. I felt like the hot route preparation/execution/scheme wasn't good last year. I'm hoping having an OC will rectify this.
That sounds like an overreach on Corbett at this time. I would take average play. I do think Boom is going to be average or better.
Well, it was only two possible sacks reported on the first drive. As the below quote implied it could have been communication or something with TE help. We didn't see any plays so to say Floyd was abusing him repeatedly sounds a bit over the top. We don't know how they adjusted.
We know Havenstein has had some problems with speed rushers and they are calling his neck hold which changed last year. It's still early so lets at least see some play before throwing in the towel just yet. Keep in mind there is no game planning. We don't know how much McVay is rolling/moving Goff around to avoid the pass rush and slow down the pass rush while tiring the defense out.
