About the Rams Offense…

Stafford had a decent first half, but he was off badly in second half. In particular when targeting Kupp and Atwell. Lots of first downs and at least one TD were left on the field.

Once again, McVay abandoned his running game. It’s like he can’t help himself. Very frustrating.

And McVay wasn’t using 12 sets that I noticed. These last 2 things could’ve helped our TOP ratio immensely. How did that work out for you, Sean?

What kind of an OC is LaFleur when he doesn’t get in McVay’s ear when McVay goes off the rails with his predictable play calling?

I thought Williams was supposed to be a pass pro ace, but WTF?

About the Rams Defense…

Hoecht is just killing us. Opponents are gleefully targeting him and will continue to do so as long as he’s on the field as OLB. Wouldn’t you? Can Morris come up with a different option of some kind? Or are we doomed to watching this weekly mismatch?

Eagles clearly found a way to neuter AD and no other Rams were able to take sufficient advantage.

Let’s face it. Rams cannot generate the necessary pressure and opponents know it. A mobile QB like Hurts will feast on the ground against us. Probably can’t fix this until next offseason. Sigh…

I blame both the Offense and the Defense for that obscene imbalance in TOP. Neither unit was able to do their jobs nearly well enough. Hard to watch, wasn’t it?

Our D players don’t know how to tackle, do they? They constantly kept Eagle drives alive further complicating the TOP imbalance. Tackling should be such a fundamental thing, too.

Kendrick picked a bad time to revert to his crippling foul tendencies, huh? Such exquisite timing. Frankly, I think opposing teams are targeting both Hoecht and Kendrick and with good success, I might add.

Rams D allowed an Eagle TD after Rams took the lead with only 32 seconds left in the half? How is that possible?

That Eagle ‘push tush’ play should be made illegal. What is the league waiting for?

And yet, even with all of the above the Rams were only down by 6 with approximately 6 minutes to go. Point being that this was a winnable game, y’all. Coaching miscues and poor player execution cost Rams this victory. That’s what is frustrating me this morning.

This was NOT an implosion such as Cowboys had vs 49ers last night.

Arrrrrgh!

I’ve given up expecting McVay to adjust his offensive sets and play calling. Clearly, he does not have it in him, way too stubborn. I guess he just channels the inner Mike Martz in him.

Offense: the Rams just need more easy offense. It looks like everything has to be perfectly drawn up or perfectly executed through the air. You can only sustain that but so long against a decent defense. They need to be able to just hand the ball off and pick up chunk plays but they just can't. Hopefully this is a sign to invest in a real running back and a little more offensive line. Our team's best offense was always when you could hand the ball to Gurley and pick up 6 yards to a touchdown. That's not even good play calling. That's just lay ups. This offense needs more layups.

Defense: we have to have the youngest defense in the league don't we? I don't think there's anything to do there except take the bumps and bruises. Guys like Turner and Young will continue to grow and we will continue to add pieces to that unit. But there's no scheming or miraculous light bulb that will turn on for a lot of them. It's just a growth process. And growth can be painful and agonizing.

I mention this in another thread, but Martz used to come out and ground and pound with Faulk once in a while to keep D on their toes.

McVay seems to go all pass when a run doesn't gain 10 yards. Another game where YPC were around 5, yet we kept allowing for pressure to eliminate all of our WR options. We need to work on draw/screens and get it down like the 9ers. I threw up a little writing that, but it is unfortunately true.

It's a target rich environment... but anyway...
Offense: Roughly, 3 rushing attempts, per quarter (14 for the game). Probably a bad metric.
Defense: Allowed 13 of 18, 3rd downs to be converted. Would've no doubt been less, if it wasn't for that damn rugby maneuver

McVay called a pretty good game. He shows he can regularly outscheme in the first half against coaches with better talent.

Young team is learning how to be pros on the fly. Giving up TD's at the end of the half is a sign of our youth. That can be fixed.

I bet the over on season wins last summer. Still feel good about that bet. If we get to play a WC game, this season will be a huge success in my book.

I was happy to see Mathis get his first snaps at OLB, although it appeared to come at the expense of Byron Young and not Hoecht. I didn't really understand why we followed this method. Next week I'd hope to see Mathis, Young & Donald all on the field at the same time.

Your Points are valid, but i am not frustrated at all with the team. I feel like this is what you get when you reset for next year. I am disapointed that the offense did nothing in the 2nd half, but most of that was Stafford missing his chances.
The schedule looks to be easier and i think Staf will heat up. then once he gets on a roll, look out.

I get the game plan probably was figuring the odds were best to put it in Staff's hands, and to get a lead, which we did, and it's okay they stuck with it opening the 2nd half. After that, we were behind, their D was being trained on it, and just pinning their ears back, yet McVay still kept at it; I feel we definitely needed to mix in some runs or change it up at that point.

speaking of the whinners i sure would like to have their training staff because they don't seem to have injuries like us and also almost to the position they seem to be physically stronger. now if i don't puke it almost looks like the whinners are going to start another dynasty yikes am feeling very sick most go barf see you later.

I think people need to realize we will never be a run first team. Shanahan might be wired that way but McVay is not. The only reason we ran the ball so much in '17 and '18 was because Gurley was the best RB in the league and Goff is best off play action.

I think McVay wants to skew heavily towards the pass, using the run to keep defenses honest. So in games where we fall behind or aren't running the ball well we can get very predictable.

Yeah, this is like the first year, so maybe we should cool our jets on that.

Other than last year, we’ve been among the healthiest teams in the NFL, so I’ll take Reggie and staff over any other in the NFL

True as are most teams when they fall behind for obvious reasons, I hate when people compare rushing stats in games when in one game you have a big lead most of the game and the other you are way behind and then follow it up with guess what we won the game we rushed the ball a lot.

I've always found it best to believe what people do not what they say. Despite the public praise, McVay gives Williams he knows he's not a game breaker, which is why he doesn't stay with it. Note the difference when he had Gurley. They released Akers because he chaffed at how he was used and the lack of commitment to the run game despite what McVay says. I think it was a mistake by both sides.

But the lack of threat by the running game is glaringly obvious. Look at how teams would play the Niners if they didn't have him. Teams have to account for Christian in the same way teams have to account for Kupp. When McVay had Gurley he had Woods and Kupp and teams had to gameplan for both run and pass. They don't do that now.

If they don't dustoff Evans after looking at River's hesitation because of poor field vision then there must be more as to why Zach is kept on the shelf.

I don't think Evans can pass block yet.

as long as he believes that a running play is a wasted play, (he said so) he will never embrace it like I think it should be. that's a different coach, not McVay. go rams.

You can toss it, Im not, and the players arent.

This is a playoff team and once your in anything can happen.
The players aren’t? No shit? Maybe because they are playing to stay on this roster for this year and next year?

The strategy hasn’t changed from January/February from our FO. This is a an experience year and our FO knows it. Next year is the prize. Regardless if blockheads have no vision or insight into what is actually happening.
