Get to know a rookie: Jamaine Sherman

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- We've officially reached the closest thing to a dead period the NFL has to offer these days as organized team activities are over and training camp has not yet arrived.

That means vacation time for the players, coaches and, yes, reporters. In the meantime, let’s get to know some of the lesser-known additions to the St. Louis Rams' roster: the rookie free agents.

Jamaine Sherman

Position: Wide receiver

College: East Texas Baptist

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 188 pounds

Stat to know: Set his school's season receiving record with 1,084 yards in 2013, making him the first wideout in school history to crack the 1,000-yard mark. That was his lone season at ETBU but he made the most of it on his way to all conference honors for his Division III school.

Road to the roster: The Rams are largely unproven at wide receiver but they have big plans for the receivers they have in place, which means Sherman is going to be facing a difficult battle to land on the roster. The team will likely keep five or six wideouts with Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Chris Givens, Austin Pettis, Brian Quick and Stedman Bailey as definitive frontrunners for those positions. Bailey is facing a four-game suspension to start the year which could leave an opening for someone to sneak on to the 53-man roster in the meantime, but Sherman would have to have a monster preseason and do well on special teams to do that.

An interesting guy.

Not much to see out there on video, but from what I see; I dunno. He's a long shot.

East Texas Baptist???? Really? Years ago we used to joke about drafting a QB out of Indiana Baptist, amazing. Sherman was a long shot and then missed all of OTA's so I give him no shot.
