I don't get it. Nothing against the guy, but another 5'9" 173 pound DB?

Rated as one of the top cover corners by PFF last season.

No cornerback Duke Shelley -- It was not expected that the Raiders would not keep Duke Shelley.

Our Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. projected that Shelley would be one of the six cornerbacks the Raiders would keep, but he did not make the cut.

Shelley had a great season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, grading out as one of the top cover corners in the league on Pro Football Focus. Shelley finished with a 86.7 coverage grade, third-highest in the NFL.

As it stands, the Raiders decided not to keep Shelley, which comes as a surprise based on how well he performed last season.

I find it really interesting that he is being signed to the active roster, because it highlights something I didn't know: Maher was actually signed to the practice squad, not the active roster.

They have the ability to protect 4 players on the practice squad that nobody can sign plus they can activate him for 3 weeks before having to promote him to the active roster. They did the same thing with Matt Gay a couple of years agon.

Wouldn't be surprised if Sean Jolly is replaced by Shelley, opening up another spot on the active roster.

Rant:

I'm so fuckin tired of small DBs. I'm so fuckin tired of getting ran over and through by physical teams and players.

And they continue the trend of getting small dudes.

God damn.

Another small DB that plays much bigger. I’m not going to harp on his size too much because he’s surprisingly physical. Could be a gem if 2022 wasn’t a fluke.

My exact initial reaction - another smurf, wtf.
Then I thought of Tomlinson...

This guy is a good player. I like the signing.

You can NEVER have enough DB’s.

Maybe they couldn’t pass up the chance but I’d rather they picked up a good return specialist.

Au contraire, the first and foremost job for a NFL Cornerback is pass coverage. He needs to stick with receivers and compete for the ball.
His abilities against the run is definitely secondary to that.
Besides if the Rams are having trouble stopping the run game look no further to our highly questionable front seven.
A big burly defensive back ain't going to make much of a difference if the boys up front are getting steam rolled.

Very good points and I agree! Just tired of small DBs when WRs and everyone are getting bigger is all!
