F that. I rather draft G Beebe from Kansas State in the draft or someone like him than spend 19-20 mill. Go out and get Hunter or Josh Allen at OLB for that amount.
I agree. That's why I wrote that the Rams can NOT afford to use the Franchise Tag on Dotson.

However, a lucrative long-term deal (even a little over-pay) can be structured to have a lower year-one cap hit.

Yeah wasn’t really thinking you were was more commenting on that horrible idea.

I like Dotson and want to resign him. Sportrac has him at what 6 million a year? So I don’t know how accurate they generally are with projections. Let’s face it he’s had one super year, what does that translate to I wonder?

Imagine pairing him and Avila with one of those star centers?!!? Literally bull doze fuckers! Lol

That number is low.. from what I’ve read it’s 50… and that’s before any restructuring.
I would probably sign Dotson.. and the cap number wouldn’t be that high the first year.

I am just going off Spotrac and Over-the-Cap.

Spotrac has it at $48M but that has NOT been up-dated.
The off-season cap space is off the top-51 contracts but the Rams only had 36 players under contract as of Monday.
The $48M was based on those 36 players; and does Not reflect the players signed in the past few days.
15 players were signed to reserve/futures contracts since Tuesday. That brings the total to 51 under contract.
Those fifteen contracts (all between $800,000 - $900,000) have to be added; and that's about another $12M.
Once Spotrac up-dates, the $48M will come-down to about $36M

OTC has been updated and reflects the additional contracts. OTC has the Rams current cap space at just under $30M.

You can see all of this on the Rams' page for Spotrac and OTC.

We are not on the same page as far as how much cap space the Rams can (realistically) and will open-up.
I think it will be some but not as much as you have suggested.

when was the last time the Rams tagged someone?
Players usually don't like getting franchise-tagged because it jeopardizes their long term security. I wonder if the Rams purposely avoid using the tag because they want to be known as a "player friendly" organization.

Thanks for the details.

Can I ask what the reluctance is on going big? What is the downside, especially for the next 2-3 years?

Here is a good example.

Last off-season, the Packers re-signed their 27-year old guard Elgton Jenkins to a 4 year / $68M contract.
That's $17M per-year on average. Dotson will probably want a comparable deal, at a minimum.
Now that's a ton of $ but Jenkins' 2023 cap hit (year one of the contract) was less than $7M.

Oh man, we have discussed this.

In my opinion, most of the Rams that could be restructured are bad candidates to restructure because they are too old and have too few good years remaining.

There are several players under contract right now with Void Years that are going to cost the Rams future cap space. Significant additional Dead-$ from bad restructures could be so extreme, it may make it difficult for the Rams to to re-sign players like Jones, Nacua, Avila, Turner and Young in a couple years.

I think the Rams will create some cap space, and add free agents ... hopefully, one or two high quality players.

Let's just see how it plays out.

But what about maximizing the Stafford window?

also.. that’s why I’m big on a 3 year deal for Hunter.
I guess after seeing this team navigate 40 & 80 million dead cap seasons, I just don’t stress about it. Much more focused on winning with Stafford.

I’m a broken record. Lol

They want Dotson back.

They’re not going to publicly state that they’ll pay him whatever he wants.

I’m betting he stays.

Let’s not understate fit. Dotson was a back up in Pittsburgh, and the number two ranked OG in the NFL with us.

A player with a gigantic contract in the wrong situation will yield significantly less money to the player. Overall, then a very large contract in the right situation.

Obviously a tag is worst case scenario and not something I want to do. But all I have to do is look at our interior oline previous years compared to 2023 and know I want this stud back at ALMOST any reasonable cost. And cap space is a myth... plenty of cap room they can make if they need it this offseason. What we are showing right now has no significance to stopping them from getting the players they want.

Jackson has already said he won't play OG. LT is the highest paid OL position and that is all he wants to play. This is why Noteboom who just wanted to start was willing to move. So it's why I see a tender year coming for Jackson who would need to play a lights out year like Dotson did at RG to be extended at the money he wants.

This is why the Rams will draft a LT this year and might play him at RT to gain experience before moving him in 2025 to LT. That is assuming they don't want to pay Havenstein his $14.7M. They might see releasing Havenstein and Noteboom to clear what they need to sign Dotson and extend Shelton.

Jackson's technique was hit or miss all season which is to be expected. That said he must take the next step in development if he wants to stay. He needs to become more consistent. He needs to strengthen, improve his footwork and hand technique. It's why I don't see him as a lock to be their LT in 2025 and expect the Rams to hedge their bets with a LT in this coming draft.

Biggest needs:

Rd 1 QB1
Rd 2 CB
Rd 3 LT
Rd 4 traded for Dotson
Rd 5 Edge
Rd 5 RB
Rd 6 They should have 3 picks
Rd 7 They should have 3 picks
Andy Kaufman would respect this level of commitment to a bit.

I'd say 80/20 he's leaving. He's gonna get a bag out there on the market. And our money will go to pass rush and corners.

He played too well unfortunately and will be gone in FA. This front office wont pay $15-20M for an IOL given how well we draft.

The bigger retention next year probably will be Munchack.

Per Jourdan, McVay wooed him for months. And Wendy talks about how 3rd down protections were all him.

This will be the most important guy to keep.
