If he were going to sign for league minimum or close, that'd be one thing. I doubt that. He's not really the guy for the Rams' system though.

Ogletree always gave solid effort, so it’s hard to explain the missed tackles when the effort appears there.

He's in too much of a hurry to get where he needs to be. So he's easily side stepped which leads to the arm tackles which leads to the missed tackles. Just not smart play from him in crucial situations.

Good lbers are in the right position so they can hit with their shoulders and wrap up with their arms. Ogletree is not one of those lbers.

I am pretty surprised at some of the takes on Ogletree in this thread. He was quite good as a Ram, albeit he did have his drawbacks. Arm tackling, as has been noted, was likely his biggest weakness. It cost us vs. the Falcons in the playoffs and I think that is distorting some peoples' memories of his overall body of work.

To his credit, Ogletree was an athletic linebacker who always brought high intensity and a good work ethic to the field (too much intensity at times, as he took some bone-headed penalties). Importantly, he also had a knack for making splash plays and causing turnovers. He was also very good in coverage - which makes sense, as I believe he was a safety at one point in his career (or perhaps I am thinking of another ex-Ram?). Obviously, I have no idea, personally, how he was in the locker-room. But I have read that he is well-liked by teammates and a good leader. Teams can use vets like that.

Worryingly, New York fans seem to suggest that his coverage skills have really declined in the past year or so. He's also a number of years older since we last saw him in horns. So some of his biggest assets - speed, athleticism, splash plays, and turnovers - might well have taken a decline, only to degrade further in the coming years.

Overall, the Rams are really weak at LB if we lose Littleton, which seems like it might be likely. If we don't draft a LBer high, I'd lump Ogletree in with all of the other FA linebackers out there - consider him if the price is right, when weighed against what other players are out there (and at what salaries).

Ultimately, I suspect that Ogletree will cost more than he's worth, with his best days also being behind him. But I'm still surprised so many have dismissed him summarily. "Go get a thumper", they say. Get in line with almost every other NFL team. The Rams do not have much cap room. We might well have to settle for whatever "plus" players are available, regardless of their genre, and pluck the guys that we think or system can maximize.

He always over pays for players he could have signed earlier than he did. Over pays for Ogletree, but wouldn’t cough up the dollars for Littleton. Who cares where they were drafted . -Yes Les Snead is a part of this, but Demoff it goes back to Chris Long,JL#55 & beyond.

Demoff didn't do the contracts for Long and Laryngitis.

Ogletree is only good as a 4 - 3 outside linebacker who is the eyes on QB guy

No doubt an effort guy, and he hustled on plays, but he was a bad tackler. He was fast enough and strong enough but I think he's never been coached well.

He was a drag down tackler IMO.

I think you stand pat and sign Littleton...any problem with that?

He's excellent. Do the Rams have the money for that? What other holes won't get filled, if he goes top end of the market? The goal is to have a great roster to win the Super Bowl, not just to sign a few great players and then have major holes and no depth, so that the team goes 9-7 and misses the playoffs.

What he said.

Yeah, it’s easy to be armchair GM and say “pay Littleton— Ogletree isn’t close to his talent!” Yeah, agreed. But the hard truth is that the Rams are gonna have to make some hard choices this year that will be tough to accept. If Littleton asks for the moon, we may have no choice but to let him go.

I too am mostly skeptical of Ogletree. It would be a significant risk to assume he can still play close to his 2017 level. Having said that, though, kinda surprised that ppl seem to so easily forget that Tree made some huge contributions in some big wins (the strip/recovery to seal the win vs Hawks at the Coliseum, for example).

Don’t believe it. The rookie contracts are one thing, the following years were another

My last memory of Ogletree was his missed tackle vs Atlanta in playoff game on 3rd down run play on their first series. Critical 3rd down in their territory that they picked up for 1st down and never seemed to look back. He's fast as shit, but when you whiff who cares?

@So Ram Weren't those deals done by Deveaney?

I think Demoff has done all these deals. He overpays it seems. The Rams are always at the top of salary ever sense Demoff has been with The Rams.

He would even over pay the rookies just to end in a wired number.

It’s god for the players & he is good at creating cap space. Just makes me mad when a guy like Littleton should have been paid last season & now either walks & gets paid huge by some other team.

McSnead paying Joyner a franchise tag & Tru Johnson getting franchised twice.

The Rams got lucky with letting J. Jenkins go though !! The Rams could have made that decision earlier though & locked in Tru who at the time had not played that great, but Jenkins was always a head case. Tru played so well he lead the NFL in INT. Which put his made his salary go way up. He never was that great of a CB though. Could not stay on the field & made bonehead plays & penalties.
