Hey guys, was just wondering if anyone here works in cybersecurity.

I got my Sec+ last February, wanted to go the more technical route, but a sales opportunity opened up at an MSSP so I took it (not an easy industry to break into).

I’m actually really enjoying it and am working toward becoming a sales engineer next year!

Would love to pick your brains if anyone works in the industry!

I got my Sec+ three years ago and trying to get my Cloud+ and 2 more to try and crack into the Cloud/Server. First I need to get better with Linux because I'm absolute crap with it tbh, which that's my biggest weakness right now.

How you liking working for a MSSP?

Dude that’s awesome! Cloud’s the way to go from what I understand.

What do you do exactly, if you don’t mind me asking?

I really enjoy working at an MSSP. There’s a lot of room to grow and learn a ton of different things in cyber.

I’m primarily focused on MDR since we have a proprietary platform. Been shadowing our SOC team. It’s wild the capabilities some of these SIEM and EDRs have.

Congratulation on the certs...

Before I retired I did network consulting and then moved in-house, for basically the same thing. Security has certainly evolved from sort of an ad-hoc approach, to a what is now strong discipline to insure reliability.

My last gig was at a power generation and utility company. One of my last projects was oversight of the critical cyber assets used to manage and control generation and distribution. I can assure you that this infrastructure is well protected - and that protection does not come cheap. The cost to deploy secure infrastructure and the on-going regulatory requirements, are neither trivial nor inexpensive.

There was a time that these assets would never be put into a cloud. Since comprehensive security also includes addressing access to the physical devices, I'm not sure that will change. But then again - not my circus now!

Dude sorry I missed this reply somehow freaking how but thank you!

I been told the same Cloud is the shizel if you want a remote job and great pay.

So honestly by trade I'm a Controls Engineer which mostly limits you to in person things but I've always been into coding, cyber security, and networking for fun. Talking with some people in my personal life a few years ago and and a few here it encouraged me to get my BS in Cybersecurity and I been on the cert hunt every since to get up there. Problem is I started several businesses in South America (just launched my first site www.vamosandes.com) and it's killing all my free time right now, but my heart tells me I need to get out of what I'm doing and go full board in Cloud remotely and take on these businesses to another level.

Dude that sounds awesome, where are you leaning on going on dedicating yourself to right now? We are going to be in a world of shit soon with China and Russia maintaining what they are in the CS sector with North Korea not being as skilled but bold asf in what they are doing and things are going to go down IMO in the next 4-5 years.

Nice man that's interesting as hell. So are you telling me that the power generation company(s) invest a lot into the security from your experience? Never tried to get into a power companies network but you always hear about how bad it is, how long ago was it and did they have dedicated servers onsite I assume you guys set up or firewalled etc. at the time?

Out of curiosity did you work for cisco? Or sold Cisco products?

I work in Cyber, my company provides easy access to endpoints and the applications on those endpoints, while also strengthening the security posture of an organization. I have 8 sales reps, 4 business development reps and 3 sales engineers in my organization. Check out Imprivata.com and happy to connect and share ideas.

So, basically the critical cyber assets are built in an isolated "island" network. Where multiple locations are connected to each other (for real time replication and backup) you are obviously using encryption through a firewall, from dmz points. No one and nothing is allowed to make a direct conection into the isolated network, forom a lower security zone. Access is only granted by accessing a dmz point and then using sommething like RDP to gain access into the secure isolated network/hosts. 2-factor all around.... All updates and patches have to come through a dmz point and must have recorded documentation filed for chain of custody, including certificate proof of the source and valid checksums.

I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, then the power company, then left for International Network Services - than back to the utility. At DEC and INS, we sold Cisco products or partnered with Cisco (depending on the scale).

There were both highlights and low-lights to the entire experience!!

No worries brotha!

I like that plan for you. My gf and I always talk about becoming business owners, so that's definitely the long-term goal. Good luck! Love that you've launched your first site.

Right now, I'm a BDR at an MSSP and the goal is to transition to a Sales Engineer. I like the idea of being technical but still having a sales role / build relationships with clients. I'm at a great company who's embracing it too. It's been a great ride and I really enjoy working there!

Good to know some cyber guys are on the board.

25 year network engineer here for major ISP.

Got my cyber masters a few years ago (loved it!) but waiting for my pension to max out in July ‘25 before considering getting into the field.

Might stay within my company and transfer to a cyber role or possibly branch outside the company, but that might be a bit scary as I’ve been with the same company my whole career.

Anyways, interested to hear everyone’s take on jobs out there.

25 years in Networking and security here as well. IT was never my passion, but it pays well and provided for my family. I'm about to retire @ 52, and not a minute too soon. Network on call rotations and all nighters for outages are a young man's game, haha.

Might do some SOC work later for some easy money if I get bored though.

Tons of well paying jobs in ITSec, so you should be good now that u have your foot in the door. Agree with the sales engineer role. I did that for a few years back in the early 2000s and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately there was too much travel involved and I had a young family, so I had to give it up.

I know people in the ITSec field that barely know how to log into a PC....making 6 figures easy. It's scary how bad the talent pool is considering how important it is to most companies.

Ain't that the truth.... Depending on the call-out frequency, it can really suck.
And I might add, who the hells idea was it that decided IT folks can be exempt employees? :dizzy:

Great to know man!

That is pretty wild to hear about people being that technically inept but it’s not totally surprising either.
