Is it weird that I love the guy, but I'm still mad at him for leaving the team to Martz? Martz needed to go plant his flag elsewhere while Vermeil's sentimentality should have kept Warner in the fold for years. I should be grateful for anything following the Rams' years in the darkness, but I hoped for more.

I think he wanted to change his mind, but the organization didn't want to lose the their OC to another team. He couldn't change his mind for the Rams and then the Chiefs gave him that opportunity. with Trent Green. I love the guy, but hate the upper management for pushing him out.

Back then, if they lost Martz they lost the “main reason” for their transformation into Champions. The offense.

But, yeah… sucks to have lost Vermeil… if he truly wasn’t ready to retire.

They really love Dick Vermeil here in Philadelphia. He is on the local sports radio shows promoting his wine company while still giving great football insight. He still lives about 40 miles or so from Philly. He turned around three NFL franchises around and got our Rams their first Super Bowl NFL Championship! Doesn't seem that long ago he was coaching the UCLA Bruins, football team. He has made his way right into the NFL Hall of Fame.


PS: I wish he stayed too. I was surprised he decided to leave without waiting to really think it through.

On Saturday, August 6, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members. Finishing up the array of speeches will be former Eagles, Rams, and Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil.

Via NFL.com, the Hall of Fame announced the order for the eight speeches on Tuesday.

Here’s the roster: (1) LeRoy Butler; (2) Sam Mills (remarks will be made by his widow, Melanie); (3) Richard Seymour; (4) Art McNally (by prerecorded video); (5) Tony Boselli; (6) Bryant Young; (7) Cliff Branch (remarks will be made by his sister, Elaine Anderson); and (8) Vermeil.

The ceremony moves back to the afternoon. It begins at noon ET on Saturday, August 6. And NFL.com says that enshrinees have been asked to limit their speeches to six minutes, with music to play them out if they last longer than eight minutes.

We’ll believe it when we see it.

Some would say that the Hall of Famers deserve to take as long as they want. And that’s fine, if it’s not being broadcast on live television. If it’s a live TV show, the audience has to be respected. Letting the speeches go on and on and on and on fails to do that.

What we couldn't do was have Martz coach for 2000 season and then step down for Vermeil's sake. That's the situation we would've been in. Vermeil was adamant that he was done coaching after 1999. He told the Rams that and left no room for ambiguity. Vermeil actually signed an agreement with the Rams saying he would not coach another team, which he broke. When rumours began to fly that he was going to coach the Chiefs, the Rams were completely stunned that he was coming back.

Rams had him under the guise of a consulting contract through the 2001 season, in which they paid him $2 million as a "thank you" for getting us to the Super Bowl.

The Rams signed a new contact with Martz in December of 1999 that guaranteed he would inherit Vermeil's job. And that was DV's idea, so Martz wasn't going anywhere.

Owner Georgia Frontiere tried to talk Vermeil out of it, team president John Shaw said he should at least wait to make sure and special teams coach Frank Gansz made an impassioned plea. Rams players just wanted the best for the coach who made it a point to get to know all of them.

"I feel indebted to coach Vermeil," said linebacker London Fletcher, who also urged Vermeil to stick around. "He gave me an opportunity that maybe nobody else would have and I'm very grateful."

Vermeil had two years left on his contract when he retired. Rams tried to keep him. It's not on them.
