Bend But Don't Break
On defense last season, the Rams played mostly zone coverages. Per Sharp Football Analysis, the Rams had the 4th highest rate of zone coverage in the NFL. So, I decided to look at the CB many experts consider to be the best zone coverage CB in next year's draft.
Experts have compared Chris Peal from Syracuse to Jaylon Johnson and Rock Ya-Sin. I loved both of those CBs in their respective draft classes. In 2019, the Rams held slot 31, near the bottom of the 1st round. Rock Ya-Sin was one of my top 5 preferences for that slot. He ultimately was taken at pick 34, early in the 2nd round. The Rams traded down 3 times, all the way to 61, before drafting Taylor Rapp. RYS hasn't performed as well as I had hoped. He's a solid backup to marginal starter.
In 2020, I thought that Jaylon Johnson was possibly the best CB in the entire draft. He wasn't fast and he had concerning injuries in college, but he was very good in coverage at sticking to the WR. Jeff Okudah was the 3rd overall pick that year. The Rams didn't have a 1st rounder in that draft due to the Jalen Ramsey trade. We got Cam Akers at slot 52. Johnson didn't quite make it to our slot, going at pick 50 to the Chicago Bears. Johnson has been to multiple Pro Bowls and in 2023 was probably the best CB in the NFL.
Opinions about Peal diverge as wide as probably any prospect in the draft pool. Multiple experts love Peal and think he could be taken in the middle of the 1st round. One expert suggested that he had a chance to become CB1 in the draft, which likely would result in him going top 10, maybe even top 5. Way on the other side of the spectrum, on the PFSN big board, Peal is ranked 496th out of 498 players, so low that not only would Peal not get drafted, he wouldn't even be considered to be a priority UDFA. They didn't even bother writing a profile on him, so it isn't clear why they don't like him. Sam Teets is also relatively low on Peal, putting him in the 5th round tier.
What is going on? How can the same player be a good 2026 season away from being a possible top 10 pick or a mediocre 2026 season away from being a try-out level prospect? Is Peal the next Jaylon Johnson or is he more like the next Jeff Okudah?
