I think this guy is deserving of his own thread.

He looked like a developing monster in preseason last year.

And now he gets cut and isn't even invited back for the practice squad!

Thoughts?

Maybe they like Thomas and Hardy better.

The Rams allowed a lighter weight Obo go in free agency. Even Hollins isn’t as stoutly built as Thomas. Maybe they are intrigued by his run stopping ability.

It’s also possible that after a year of weight training Garrett didn’t make the gains that they had hoped he would.

Developing monster? Cmon man.. IDK he made some plays versus 2nd and 3rd stringers, but didn't look overly skilled at all to me. He went to a D2 college vs someone like Keir Thomas who was a good HS prospect and was recruited by Alabama and South Carolina. Garrett took advantage of bad plays by the OL, whereas Thomas completely dominated his man or imposed his will in both the run and the pass. Huge difference to me.

Look at this video of Garrett's highlights from last preseason:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C613VAIFHVo

1st play - a WR is supposed to block him yet leaves him pretty much unblocked for a TFL.

2nd play- pretty good inside push and pressure which leads to sack for Williams. (IMO his best play from last preseason). But notice how Williams completely wins vs his matchup?

3rd play- runs a stunt and gets zero pressure, doesn't even put a move on the guard. Gets a nice deflection though.

4th play- TE was supposed to chip on the edge and whiffs, LT looking inside which leaves him completely unblocked to the QB.

Did Garrett make these plays. IMO he didn't. And obviously in practice he wasn't flashing enough to get kept on the 53. You cant rely on your opponent to make mistakes for you to win, you need to beat the man across from you. That's really all it comes down to. I personally think Garrett is overrated around here similar to how Nelson Spruce was after a good preseason game or two. When you look closer they dont show enough IMO.

He made some nice plays last preseason but apparently couldn't replicate it this year. Gotta keep growing as a player or you get left behind. Another reminder to not put too much stock into the preseason, you have to do it week in and week out and be able to earn time on the field. He never could do that most important thing and force his way onto the field.

I'm not sure on it, but perhaps once Hardy is put on the IR, they call up Whitley and sign Garrett back to the practice squad?

Or, as was said here already, he hasn't been healthy enough or had enough size gains to make keeping him worth the roster spot, even on the practice squad.

Hardy is better IMO. Just that simple. Garrett will make the PS and he needs another year to develop. Right now Jonah Williams is a better option coming off the edge. He's bigger, faster and stronger. Jonah can play anywhere on the DL but I think his best position is 3T or 5T. I'd take Williams over Garrett off the edge any day.

IMO he's better than Lewis in that he's faster, quicker and stronger and that's not to say more positionally versatile. I think he's on the cusp of becoming the player I envisioned when he was signed as a UDFA. I don't think his preseason was a fluke. His development has been clear since 2020. This is his third year and that is when many of the defensive players blossom. The NFL is uber technique heavy so it takes the small college players time to develop.

Garrett may want to pursue an opportunity on another PS where he feels he has a better shot and where it's cheaper to live.

You keep insisting Jonah Williams is an Edge-player yet he has NEVER played Edge.

I believe he's suggesting him as a 5T or DE who may have the capacity to play outside & inside. Perhaps as a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 5T.

Williams has played along the D-Line. He even played a lot of 1-technique in the 2nd pre-season game.

He's a versatile defensive lineman. OldNotDead has frequently compared Williams to the Rams' Edge-players, like Lewis (above).

Williams and Lewis do not play the same position.

No, but during past years, especially since we lost Morgan Fox, some have suggested that Lewis might compete as a 5T lineman, he has the size & speed.

Apples, oranges, potatoes, pine cones. They’re all vegetables so what’s the difference?
