Los Angeles Rams want more 'urgency' from Cam Akers, Sean McVay says

LOS ANGELES -- A day after running back Cam Akers played only 12 snaps in the Los Angeles Rams' season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills, Rams coach Sean McVay said Akers needs to "maximize his [opportunities] when he gets them."

"No matter who you're talking about, you want to see guys do the little things the right way, compete with and without the ball," McVay said. "There were some instances where there were some positive things and some things that he can do better, but we want to see just an increased level of urgency and accountability snap in and snap out from him."

Akers had three carries for 0 yards on Thursday night. Running back Darrell Henderson Jr. started the game, playing 54 snaps and running for 47 yards on 13 carries.

McVay said he knows what Akers is "capable of," and because of that, he's confident that Akers will "be that guy that we've all seen at the right moments as this season continues to progress."

"We've all seen how talented and what a special player this guy's capable of being," McVay said. "And I want to see him reach his highest potential. And that's really all there is to it. It's not about anything other than when he and Darrell [Henderson] are playing at a high level, I feel really good about those two guys at running back for us.

"And the opportunities were minimal. There were some things that within each of those individual plays that I think that we can be better collectively, starting with me, then to the players around him, but also with Cam. And so it's more of a reflection of the confidence that I know what he can be and I'm confident that he'll be that guy that we've all seen at the right moments as this season continues to progress. And that's our job to help get it out of him."

McVay was also asked about wide receiver Allen Robinson, who had one catch for 12 yards against Buffalo, but was targeted just twice.

"[Buffalo] did a great job of executing," McVay said. "We've got to try to get Allen more involved. But there were some opportunities for him to come to life that for a lot of different reasons, it didn't end up occurring. But those are things that we'll look into week in and week out."

The hell is that suppose to mean? So ARob had more oppurtunities then what we saw? That is interesting, so is he saying he was half assing on routes which is why he wasn’t targeted as much? I don’t get it.

Stafford has fallen in love with his security blanket, Kupp. It's like he didn't bother to learn the other WRs/TE routes in the offseason. Tunnel vision

it means stafford was looking for kupp.

it's hard to come to life if the qb isn't looking your way.

It did feel like there was only Kupp and Hendo out there a lot of the time.
Who that falls on is rather a collective effort to sort out.

Wow, McVay calling out players a little more than he has in the past.

Subtle, yes, but I think he was definitely calling out the effort level from both Akers and AR.

Sounds like a SUPER BOWL WINNING COACH is letting his team know this effort wasn't worth a damn. I love it.

That bail out he did on his pass pro responsibilities is a benching offense. That is not a "Cam you bad boy now get in here for the team Kumbaya clap" offense. It's a "sit the fuck down and pray you get back in another game" offense.

Snead needs to go get us a RB. And I hope it's someone with some gravitas to his run style.

When mcvay says you lack urgency.. that is the biggest put down he will use publicly. It's what he has said of players in the past who lost jobs. It's his coach speak for lack of execution and effort.

Idk if Cam and Robinson are both in the doghouse? Why wouldnt mcvay try to get both more involved?

To be fair the offense wasn’t able to maximize in anything. When your OL crumbles like sand castles you really can’t do much really. Lanes need to be developed and QB space needs to be cushioned much longer.

They're probably the only two whose routes developed before defenders would get to Staff.

It could also mean they were calling plays for ARob, but couldn’t get him the ball due to the constant pressure & sacks

I didn't think he was as hard on A Rob, I hope we can settle into a rhythm against Atlanta and get him and Stafford some quality connections. Cam was in on 12 plays he didn't block or run well, I don't know what it will take to get him going. I fear it may be in his head more than physical but I certainly have zero info on his situation. I just know he hasn't looked right since the injury

I did see a play where big number 97 beat Edwards and Akers had a chance to try and block him. Seemed like he wanted no part of that and moved away from him looking back to see if the ball would come his way. Stafford got the pass off but was blasted in the process.

It's what he said about goff after the phins game. Alarm bells were ringing. Then he called him out after the second whiners game. I didn't want to believe it but then he used the right now line after the season and it was all over for Goff.

So cam has been warned.

Did anyone notice how lost Higbee looked last night. I recall one good catch and run, several drops snd no stand out blocking.
