If Spagnolo was ever to get an HC gig, he'd be considered on the Andy Reid tree.

Yes. Even one year under a coach is a significant window of development for someone who is gifted and works hard to take full advantage. McVay was on record early on about what working for Ratboy, who was the OC at Washington when he was the TE coach, taught him. That was a two year window where even as just a position coach he was exposed to the high quality expectations, where submitting an idea by itself was not enough, because Ratboy would ask what if this and what if that and go deep into it. So the requirement of preparation, the way Ratboy ran the offense as the coordinator behind the scenes, was a crucial skill.

This applies to defense as well. And don't think for a moment that McVay is that guy he was in his first few years when he had Wade. He's not that guy on the sideline any more who has his mind fully into the offense. His hire of Staley was to learn the defense that caused him the most problems. Staley did a good job and all, and is part of his tree like it or not, but the key with him coming in was the schematic knowledge of how the defense is structured in its priorities and calls.

So with Morris he absolutely is a McVay tree branch now. Because as head coach he will be vetting his coordinator gameplans with the same detailed approach that McVay used for him, not to mention the culture side and how to work with the front office in the acquisition of players.

Seriously, I realize it's just a title and can mean different things with different teams, at different times.

My point is that it can over-complicate the structure and operation of a football team. It sounds like a GM role but the Jaguars are going to hire a GM. How will it play out. Sounds like a Cluster-Fuck in-the-making ... and it's just not necessary.

The Rams have an Owner (Kroenke), a President (Demoff), a VP of Football and Business Admin (Pastoors),
a GM (Snead) and a Head Coach (McVay). That's it! That's the Leadership Group. And, there doesn't seem to be any significant over-lap.

Snead and McVay are the football guys. They work together; and seem to speak as one in most cases.

I think some owners can not get out of their own-way; and Do Not learn from past mistakes.
There is a term for such people ... Dumb Ass Mother-Fuckers.
