In today's NFL, much of a player's success is predicated on his fit in the scheme or system he plays on his team. Find a bad fit and your career can quickly take a turn for the worse and, potentially, even bring it to an abrupt end.
Unfortunately for the players, they don't get much say in where they play until they've been in the league for four years. That's when those who will get big second contracts can become unrestricted free agents.
On Monday, ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen offered a look at some players who made wise decisions when it comes to finding the right fit in free agency. Among those taking the right approach according to Bowen were Robert Griffin III, Bruce Irvin and Travis Benjamin. The list mostly consists of players who signed with a new team, with one notable exception.
Bowen listed Los Angeles Rams linebacker/safety Mark Barron as a great fit for his current team even though he simply re-signed. As Bowen pointed out, Barron found the perfect role to get his career back on track after a rough start in Tampa Bay. Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams found the best way to utilize Barron's skills, and it could have been harmful to his future to go somewhere else where he might not have been used as wisely.
It obviously didn't hurt that the Rams paid him very well, but sometimes the match between team and player is just too good to leave.
