Are we better at third pass catcher than the media thinks?

I don't think it's a guarantee but i think there are few lanes that may prove we're more resilient and better than what the media thinks when it comes to the third pass catcher role (I say third cause I'm gonna talk about TE's we'll be using in the slot and out wide).

I do think we can set both Smith and Whittington aside right now. We've had enough time with them to understand exactly what they are. While Smith had the dominate snap share of all the "other" WR's on the field last year, he's an extremely limited WR in terms of route ability and so-so as a blocker. He does have speed but more quick than fast and his timed speed doesn't pop on film like other fast guys.

Mumpfield had some good plays last year and while slight, showed some skill at as a route runner. He seemed to not be a liability as a run blocker but as it stands now he seems below average there. Will a year in an NFL weight program allow him to put on some weight without losing his agility? Can he improve in his route savvy which was already pretty decent?

Fergy will be a year in the system too. He lined up in the slot (a tiny bit out wide) quite a bit last year and was tantalizing on out and ups, crossers, posts, corners though he struggled with contested catches. Can he take the next step and maximize his long speed, size and wingspan?

Klare is really tantalizing as a slot receiver. He can run every route on the route tree (Fergy has some limitations here). While not a speed demon at the spot, the guy has fantastic accelerate and seems like a YAC monster. (Kind of hilarious that if we had just picked Sadiq, all the Rams should have gotten help at pass catcher would have gone away and Klare is being completely overshadowed).

Finally, there's CJ. A player who's had an injury history in college (foot stuff) but has shown great hands and savvy ability in contested catch situations. He doesn't have to be a stud, he just has to offer more than Smith, Whitt and Mump to get on the field. He can play every WR spot on the field too. Seems like a great blocker too.

What do you guys think, is this stuff getting blown out of proportion?

We should have some cap room freed up that we do not have to send to G-String, hopefully used on a vet WR.

No doubt, bringing in a vet is an option.

I suspect Rams will want to get through rookie mini-camp and OTAs (do they do a rookie mini camp -feels like they haven't last few years) and see what they have with guys before making a decision on the even of training camp ala the year we brought in Robinson.

Kid just doesn't have the quicks or athleticism to get much separation but can he improve some next year?

Remember that Devante Adams designated Mumpfield as his successor but we don't know if that was just wishful thinking or veteran praise. Still I'm sure he will end up getting more snaps and we'll find out.
Between Xavier and Mumpfield and Daniels and Whittington, let's hope for a camp breakout.

Just a thought here. Is it possible, that since we're seemingly rostering FIVE Tight Ends, that we may only roster FIVE Wide Receivers??? For years and years and years it's been a 6WR/4TE split. Since it seems we are up to 5 now in tight end:

Parkinson
Ferguson
Higbee
Allen
Klare

Do we follow suit with only 5 Wide outs?

It's not inconceivable we have 6 WRs and 5 TEs. McVay always changes the rostered number at each position based on talent. Maybe they only carry 8 OL since Trost can back up every position.

Bruh, for someone who writes so well, I can't fathom how you continue to misuse this word, haha. Seriously, I really dig most of you're posts, so I hope you don't take this personally.

Per the topic. Yes, I do feel like the Rams are better than most think at WR3, regardless of who wins that tag. Personally, I think CJ is gonna be a gem. I posted this in his draft thread, but will post here as well. It's hard not to love this kid.

Interesting, Nate in his recent depth chart at the Athletic had CJ as the third WR above everyone else.

Suggests Rams would love at adding WR at trade deadline if no good option at WR 3 emerges.
If true - the Rams have the same concern I do about the 3rd WR position. And relying on a 6th round pick.....

why don't you just calm down their

Yeah and that's what quite a few people said about our CB room last year and having a pass rush.

I confess - I was one of those.
