When Jimmy G retired, I don't know that they had much choice on the backup QB position.

I disagree though with the article when it said that "the margin for error isn’t just slim, it’s practically nonexistent." IMO, having a great defense increases your margin for error. Also, it's not like Seattle has a great backup QB situation. Drew Lock isn't good.
Yeah Lock's a great example of the media's knowledge base with this shit. All it takes is some dipshit does a year for some random team, and hey he's a "backup" in their minds. But the dude who has years learning from McVay and managed to stick around isn't good enough because, well, he's never done it. Never mind that some of these QB2s don't even really play and still end up sort of carrying that backup label. There's a lot of horseshit QBs in backup roles around this league. The type of dudes you don't want coming in.

On top of that, this is the coach who had an offense that was hard as hell to stop in Washington with Cousins at QB. He's not gonna win a title or anything with a subpar option, but he's the type of coach who can win with lesser QBs than most other coaches. And if he ends up designating Bennett as his QB2 then I am sure Bennett will be able to do the job.

But this is also why I'd rather read this board than these media hacks. I mean I'm not even remotely high on Bennett as our QB2. I didn't like the pick. I didn't like him taking a fucking year off. And so on. But none of that means I'm going to rule him out or act like he's a piece of shit.

Well I get what you’re saying. I won’t sugar coat it.

If there’s talk about him having a bad practice then that’s one thing.
What I saw at training camp without pads was a Defense dominating The Rams 2nd string at times. There’s a lot harder plays to be made at times.
What I saw from Stetson on certain throws was a WEENY ARM.
He makes the reads, but in no shape or form does he have the arm any of The QB’s have.
Then again he gets through the progression & has that timer in his head.He runs more towards the outside.
Ty Simpson isn’t ready as of now to be that 2nd string QB,but from what I’ve seen is his ability & upside is there. His big asset is he can run between the tackles well. That is a element that he has over all The Rams QB.

I think the plan since Draft Day (or January?) was to completely "Red-Shirt" him this year. I really do.

I don't think you're wrong.

And I think Bennett is obviously QB2.

I think the only way JG gets involved is if someone gets injured.
I think JG is happy to live in CA in semi-retirement until he gets a call from the Rams...if that ever happens.

Bottom line is this....if Stafford goes down, we're fucked. Anybody know the record for all backup QBs last year in the NFL? It ain't good. IMO, Jimmy G might be capable of going .500 with McVay's offense. #9 misses 2 games, fine. If he misses 10 forget about it. If JG has to play in the postseason we're done. The gap from #9 to JG is HUGE! Backup QB isn't the most important roster spot, it's #1 QB.

When Jon Gruden and Mike Tirico were calling MNF together, they were at a Colts practice one day, and Gruden noticed Peyton Manning took every single rep in practice. Backup QB Jim Sorgi got zero reps. Gruden asked Colts OC Tom Moore why he didn’t give the backup QB some limited reps just in case. Tom Moore said “because if 18 goes down, we’re fucked. And we don’t practice fucked”.

That’s kinda how I feel about this team. I think Stetson could win some games and help us stay afloat over the course of 3-4 weeks. But anything longer than that and it really won’t matter. As good as the roster is we need a healthy number 9 to get to the mountaintop.

Would you say there’s also a gap between JG and Stetson/Simpson?

Absolutely.

But which gap is greater?
#9 >>>>> JG
or
JG >>>>> Bennett

Backup QBs went 34-82 (.293) last year. Take out 3 of them....Davis Mills (3-0), Kirk Cousins (5-3) and Mac Jones (5-3) and the rest went 21-76 (.217). I think some fans look at McVay's offense and believe, JG would do just fine "managing the game". Maybe, but for how long. #9 is the piece that makes McVay's offense work and we need not look at anything other than Stafford >>>>> Goff. If Stafford missed a game or two, we should be fine. Any more and were fucked, whether it's JG, Stetson or Simpson. So IMO, all this discussion over who's the #2 is preseason busy work.

Just don't see things as that simple.

A starting-QB on a top-tier-team can be injured and miss a chunk of the Regular Season ... 8-10 games ... but ... then return late in the year, and be available for the post-season.

Instead of going 14-3 or 13-4 with a Bye in the Wild Card Round, a competent back-up QB can help get the team to 10 or 11 wins, and a playoff spot.

You can't give-up too quickly ... even if it's a devastating injury.

I am amazed to see so many Rams fans calling for the return of " 49er legend " Jimmy G. :sick2:

Sure, anything is possible. But that's where that possible/probable nuance comes into play. I'm sure there are examples of exactly what you've presented but there aren't many. At least I can't think of many. Warner? Sure. Who else?

Based on what metric: yards or points?
Sorry, missed this.

Yards. If we go by points he had the same number of top 10's in Carolina and 4 in his last 7 seasons with Buffalo, including a #11 and #12, just outside the top 10. Clearly, he had good defenses in both places.
