With devalued positions greatness changes the rules. So with Love for example as a devalued position, it doesn't matter. He's still worthy of a very high pick. Same with Styles. Elite players are always a priority for a smart team. And we have a smart team.

The problem is neither will get anywhere near us. Feels very unlikely. Best bet for that is probably Downs.
I think Downs is the least likely to sniff 13 personally.

I've seen evaluators I respect say he's a top 5 talent. So I am not defending a hill on this or anything. I am simply not so sure that he's going to be valued at that level by teams.

Rationale is that while he has some snaps showing an ability to play over the top he's most likely to produce splash plays in the box. So in the NFL he's going to be used a lot in that box role, which is not a rare skillset, in that you can find them in every draft.

Also the SS types who go earlier are usually LB sized but have that safety movement ability. Downs is safety sized.

Also the Safety position is undervalued, due largely to the aforementioned supply and demand. Unless you have something that is rare or difficult to find. Downs has great instincts and is tenacious as hell but are those enough for him to go that high? Again not sure. Maybe he has an epic workout at the combine or his pro day and that gives him an edge in that respect, we'll see.

Also this Safety class has some legit options other than him. If you want to get right at safety you don't have to take it early.

Of course all it takes is one DC jumping on a table for him in the early going. Or a front office falling in love with the prospect. But again if I wanted an elite box safety, who even has size and length and strength on top of that to hold up in the box in the NFL, I'd go Styles.

Great points. And maybe EMW is a lot better then I know of right now. I think he is more in the LB size mold also.

It would be really interesting if Downs were to slide to 13, either way. I think the Rams mentality has to be that Ravens type approach where you wait and vaccuum up the BPA who falls. That's their best chance of coming out of that 13 spot with a real difference maker.

It would not surprise me if the Rams were to move up for Styles. If they were to sign Dean in FA, then move up for Styles, and take one of several corners in that round 2 range to pair with Dean, this defense would be something to watch.

I'd have to start putting a cooler by the couch instead of using defensive possessions to piss and hit the icebox.

Dammit here I go getting my hopes up again.

Yeah, they have seemed to try to go get "special players" the last two drafts. So at 13, the special players in that range could be Love, Downs, and Styles. So do they go get one of them regardless of their "less important positions". I think they might.
One of the studs fall to us, take him regardless of position.

Arm length definitely matters. How many times have you see a DE reach for the QB and miss grabbing onto him by half an inch?

But it's only part of the package. Players have to be viewed on aggregate. If a player is good enough overall, he will be a game wrecker notwithstanding his arms being an inch (or two, or three) shorter than average. It's game of inches. See the points above. But if Bain is good enough to just blow up whoever is in front of him, and get to the QB in the blink of an eye, his arms being short won't matter. I like Bain a lot. I cannot see him falling to the Rams at 13. If he does, we have to take him, even though we are already strong at the position. Hopefully other NFL GMs put too much stock in measurables and at 13 he is available.

Must admit that I'd nervously applaud the selection.
