There is an option in the CBA that you can sign that kind of contract for basic bookkeeping purposes. You spread his cap hit over a couple of years and if you cut him you void that benefit and pay it all up front. I forget who it was but somebody was saying all vet contracts are that way and that's simply not true.

Vested vet salaries are guaranteed for the season if they are on the 53 man roster game 1.
