I can tell you what I did. I hoped every fucking week that THIS WEEK was the one that was gonna turn it around for our Rams.
There was one infamous time during those dark ages that I fell prey to the negativity. I was at a fantasy football draft, the previous night Trent Green had his knee blown out, and I said to the group, "As a Rams fan, I'm used to my season being over by October, but not in August!!"
Fortunately, that didnt age well, at all!
Lol

That year in Fantasy we had our draft early because everybody had vacations & other obligations late, we sense have now with that same league do our draft on Labor Day, no exceptions as now with Zoom if some are away they can call it in.

Anyway as I digress, I selected Trent Green in that draft and then that following week he was lost for the year and I blamed myself for it. I truly believe because I drafted him I jinxed him and the Rams. FWIW, after the injury I put in a waiver claim for Kurt Warner and was granted the request. Oh what a year it was as with Warner & Bruce combination I won the title that year in Fantasy too.

I was a newlywed. Sunday morning, I see the news about Green’s injury, and I am crushed.

My bride knows nothing about football but wants to be supportive. Asks if the Rams have a good back up; and I respond “No. Some guy that has never played.”

Still trying to be supportive, she says ‘Maybe he will be good.’

I shut her optimism down, explaining that it just doesn’t work that way.

An example of being absolutely thrilled to have been completely wrong.

To this day, if I state a certainty about a sporting event, she says ‘Remember Kurt Warner’,

One of the best examples in history right there. I remember thinking Vermiel's big speech was more wishful than anything else, that they would rally around some nobody QB.

It looks like Barkley is sitting out. What does he do as the season approaches?

At 26yrs old, this feels like the best offseason to sign for more years than a 1yr tag.

I think the RB's aren't signing their franchise tenders right now, to avoid having to do mandatory offseason workouts with the team. I would think they will sign it prior to the season, rather then sit it all out and cost themselves millions. Probably also hoping to get a deal done. I'd take Barkley off their hands for a 5th ;)

Any player who willfully sits out to avoid doing the work is not worth paying. I like Barkley because not only is he talented but he's also great in pass pro, but I'd want nothing to do with him if that were to be true.

Umm AD?
The key is “with the team”. It doesn’t mean they are sitting in Cabo doing nothing but drinking and banging chicks.

It happens all the time. They want to avoid major injuries before they get the financial guarantees on a longer contract. I mean, if he tore his achilles tendon doing offseason work, that would cost him millions, particularly at RB.

Bad example. AD doesn't willfully try to avoid doing the work. He's blue collar as F.

Regardless I'd flip him for a pick and replace him in the draft if I thought what you suggested was the case.

I probably would have torn up my $100 superbowl bet on the spot if I had made the bet on July 4th weekend like I had planned if the cage wasn't closed at 2 AM.

I was in Vegas just before the season started but after Green had torn his knee up. I had a crisp $100 bill in my pocket that I brought for the sole reason of betting it on the Rams winning the SB, even with their terrible odds. For some reason, i waited until the morning we were leaving, I went to the sports book and they were not open. Oh well, I said to myself, guess I'm saving the $100 anyways......

I guess I don't see it as 'torture' to try to objectively analyze your favorite team.
Objective is taking a long look at everything, comparing it to the competition, projecting possible developments and then arriving at a POSSIBLE conclusion. I said "possible" not "probable".

If you're calling....... "we're gonna suck", "5 wins at best", "competetive as in .500?", " too many holes to patch", "we're gonna depend on 2nd year DBs? Good luck", " this is tank job for Caleb", "retool? More like complete rebuild" and "this can't be done"... being objective....or even remotely resembling objectivity.....before the draft and the rest of free agency has even unfolded, let alone OTAs and camp....then we have different definitions of the word.

Completely.

My two buddies (Merriam and Webster) and I define Objectivity as:
"Lack of favoritism toward one side or another. Freedom from bias."

Seriously though, I think we're on two different roads here. You provided some very specific quotes from posters; and they seem to have triggered you. That's OK.

There are those of us who really want the Rams to be good but we just don't have much optimism right now.

Looking objectively at what they currently have on the roster, and the resources to fill needs (3 picks between #36-77 and 8 late picks; plus limited cap space and apparently no intention for short-term cap-manipulation), we don't see how the Rams can field a strong roster in 2023. However, many of us remain hopeful!

By-the-Way, Merriam is kind of stiff but Webster is a real character!

Yeah, I mean AD probably worked out 2-3X HARDER during his hold out, they want him in camp to slow him down....

Consider the Vent Thread that followed the Rams' 2021 loss to Green Bay, culminating in a win-less November. It's a great thread to re-visit, to provide perspective. I was kind of optimistic (and calling for patience) in my analysis of the Rams at that point in time, and butted heads with a number of posters who were certain the Rams were toast at that point. Of course, the Rams went-on to win 9-of-10, including four playoff games and a Lombardi. That thread is currently on page 83 of this forum.
I think EVERYBODY on here, not just "those of us", wants the Rams to win. It's not about what we want. I'm all for objectivity. I don't mind discussing things. In fact, I enjoy discussing things....the roster, the talent, the prospects, the cap, the coaching.....with folks who have an open mind. But too often, far too often, that's not the case on a sports forum. And I'm not of the prevalent delusion, my viewpoint is the right one. We need to be concerned. About the roster, talent, etc.. If we're being objective, we shouldn't be convinced about anything. Optimism and pessimism are behavioral traits, not objectivity.

Who had Jacksonville AND the NY Giants in the postseason last April?
Who had the 2021 Patriots and Eagles in the postseason in April 2021?
Will those 3 people please identify themselves?

Truth is, we know all the cliches. "It's the NFL. There's a fine line between this or that."
We know all the right jargon. "It all starts up front" or "Defense wins Championships".

And year after year we refuse to pay them any mind. Or pay them too much mind. Does anybody here know how well or poor the Rams D or Rams O are going to be this year? Absolutely not. Does anybody know how good their opponents are going to be this year? No. So going by this, based on that, accepting this might occur, we can say with absolute uncertainty, this is what's going to happen.

So let's just objectively discuss where we're heading.
Right now, it's the draft.

I just spoke with both guys. Merriam mostly agrees with you but Webster thinks you're a little Kooky.

Seriously, and regarding the Draft. I am very interested and absolutely looking forward to it. I think it's very important to the Rams. All that being said, I'm not sure how much the Rams can improve their 2023 team with (currently) only three selections in the top-166; and none in the top-35.

I understand. It's a formidable task. But what do they REALLY need?

Offensively.
I keep hearing about IOL or LT. How about we count the guys returning from injury as "new" because if you look at the last 7 weeks of the season, they would be "new". Noteboom, Jackson, Anchrum, Bruss (and Allen or Shelton). Regardless of how WE feel about them, it's what the experts who run the show feel about them. Let's hope Kupp, ARob and VJ are fully healthy this year. Stafford. I wonder if any more lights came on for Tutu. Skowronek was a 7th round steal, so I'm not worried about him. We need another RB and a good one can be had with any of the first 3 picks.

Defensively.
The DBs!!! God the DBs!!! Well, yeah, they're young. Even Fuller will only be in his 4th year. Rochell in his 3rd. Kendricks, Durant, Jolly, Yeast and Lake in their 2nd. And we might be adding an even greener guy to the group. In the first 3 picks? Would be nice. The LBs. An under emphasized need. Jones & ?????. Hummel? Rozeboom? I like to grab one in the 5th. A hitter with an attitude. DL? Any DL that has Donald on it is 2/3's of the way there for a 3-4, 1/2 way for a 4-3. And we have so many youngins to choose from. Murchison, Bobby Brown, Ernest Brown, Jonah Williams, Copeland and if we get an Edge early in the draft, maybe Hoecht moves back to DE.

Nobody knows. But I think we've got a lot more than most people are letting on. We'll see. The draft is HUGE. EDGE, CB?, TE?, RB? ILB? C? WR? S? OG? Lotsa directions to go, lotsa picks on hand. And then after the dust settles there and those who know better will tell us what they did wrong, then we can hope for a few plugs in post draft free agency.
